Praise for The Tea Party Goes to Washington:
"An exciting and needed call to change for all Americans"
--- Sarah Palin
"Senator Paul has given us a blueprint for limited government that would make Jefferson estatic...the Senator speaks in words we understand with conviction we all admire and an understanding of the issues that is breathtaking." (Judge Andrew P. Napolitano, Senior Judicial Analyst, Fox News Channel)

First, the negatives. Senator Paul tends to be pretty repetitive in many places. I felt as though I was reading the same thing over and over in places and in a few I am sure I read the same thing more than once. The editing is not great. Most annoying Senator Paul spends a lot of time referencing the various legislation that he has put forth. After all he is a politician and he clearly has aspirations beyond the Senate seat from Kentucky. All in all this is not a great work of literature but it really isn't intended to be.
The gist of Government Bullies is a recounting of a litany of simply outrageous abuses of government power by unelected and unaccountable government bureaucrats, many armed to the teeth with guns and all armed with the nearly limitless power to make life miserable for average citizens for any or no reason at all. Each successive event that he records is more egregious than the last. A co-worker travelling with me couldn't even finish one chapter before he became so upset that he had to put the book down.Read more ›
The book is broken down into 4 parts.
Part 1: Property Wrongs - EPA bullies
Part 2: The Lacey Act - An Open License for Government Bullying
Part 3: Enemies Foreign and Domestic - The TSA and Bullies Abroad
Part 4: Keeping Us Safe? FDA and USDA Bullies
There is an example of how the EPA locked up a man for years for purchasing an auto dump and trying to clean it up. There is another example of how we locked up a man for years for breaking a Honduran law that even the Honduran government admits was never signed into law. There are examples of ridiculous fines($75,000 per day) imposed on people for moving dirt from one end of there property to another. These are all real examples of abuse by our bureaucratic wing of the government.
Please take the time to read this book. It is an easy read. If the examples of abuse here don't make you angry, then there is seriously something wrong with you. I for one am outraged.
The thing I like best about this book is the fact that not only does Rand write about these issues but also has introduced bills and amendments to help reign in these out of control agencies.
Sometimes a government agency (many times the unelected officials) forgets that they are there to serve the people and instead feel like they are the ones in charge. The book is full of examples where honest, hardworking citizens have had their rights heinously violated without so much as a second thought. Some of the examples may be extreme but the point is: these types of things are happening.
I also appreciated that it wasn't just a 280-page rant, there is some good additional material, good source material (websites and the like), and some suggestions on how we can help stop this abuse. I think awareness and general indignation is a great way to start.
The book is captivating but it's not going to win any style awards. It did feel sometimes like it was also a means for Rand to be able to tell people what he has been doing, which can be a good thing. I think when a lone person is fighting the tide and is especially against mainstream media's opinions, they tend to just ignore him and not cover him at all (witness the shameful way the Republican party ignored his father, Ron Paul at all the debates and even the convention). A highly recommended book, I'm going to lend this to everyone I know who will read it.
