Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Job hunters will welcome these works about government careers which complement each other in focus and approach. Damp's The Book of U.S. Government Jobs , an updated, comprehensive how-to guide, provides an in-depth understanding of the federal government employment system. Written in a clear, readable style, this reference answers myriad questions from civil service exams and federal pay schedules to employment opportunities. In contrast, The Government Job Finder, an expanded, more thorough sequel to Lauber's The Compleat Guide to Finding Jobs in Government ( LJ 7/89), is an outstanding compendium of resources for local, state, and federal government job seekers. Included are more than 1400 sources of information: periodicals, job-matching services, job banks, job hotlines, and directories arranged by geographic location and then alphabetically by occupation. The Almanac of American Government Jobs and Careers is an exhaustive organizational directory for locating and contacting federal government agencies and employers. Arranged by branch of government, it includes agency descriptions along with names and addresses of agency offices and employers, occupational titles and contacts. For the general reader, these titles are recommended as worthy, affordable additions to career collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Overview of the Public Arena, November 3, 1999

Regrettably, few people today know much about the public sector and fewer still have an interest in governmental careers. This situation is not helped by the fact that getting a government job is rarely easy; the hiring process is typically overly bureaucratic and devoid of any logic whatsoever (meritocratic or otherwise). This book is a tool that may help folks as they embark on this often frustrating but potentially rewarding journey.

You do not have to purchase any type of book to apply for a government job. Anyone can get a civil service job by applying at any civilian personnel office. Thank you.
