The Government Models:Development of the Colt Model of 1911,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Government Models: The Development of the Colt Model of 1911 (Hardcover)
Mr.Goddard's book is a fine one and was the best on the market until Mr. Clawson's book on the same subject was published. A complete arms library should contain both publications, but I personally feel Mr. Clawson's is a pace or two better.

As a shooter far more than a collector, I was looking for a one stop guide to the history, variations, and serial number reference for the 1911's that I have come to love over the last 25 years. Far from being a serious collector, I have owned several over the years, used them in IPSC and IDPA, and even to take white tail. I am always on the lookout for nice old Colts when I see them. This book has given me all I needed to be a little better educated on age, relative value, and authenticity. Now if I could just get it to fit in my back pocket...

Very interesting book in a format that is unique and entertaining. Some inaccuracies as far as specific facts and details but knowledge of the subject has grown since this book was written. Excellent photos of many rare and seldom seen pistols.

Excellent Source Information for Colt Automatics,

I am interested in the pre-1911 Colt automatics. This book covers them all beginning with the 1900, model by model up through and including the 1911. Photo coverage of model variations, markings is accompanied by detailed text. Of particular interest may be pages of serial numbers from Colt records of each model listing those pieces that differ from standard, giving shipping dates, destination, etc. For me it is a major supplement to my reference info on these models.

If you're seriously into the history and production of the M1911's, then you must have this book in your library. It should be referenced along with the Clawson books. I've had this book in my library for almost 20 years, and it is referenced frequently.

A really good reference book on the " Government Model 1911's " as the title aptly states. This book is a valuable asset for the collector or shooter with it's clear photos & histories of specific models. From what I've read from other reviewers a certain Mr.Clawson has a superior book but accordingly at a superior price. This book is a good read if you're a Colt 1911 Government Model lover and again it's a handy reference to have around , it's there for the answers when questions come about. A good book for the serious Colt pistol fan , owner or collector. " GOOD JOB MR.GODDARD " Thanks !
