The cost of rolling out fiber-based broadband to every home and business in the United Kingdom has been estimated at over US$50 billion, although other potential deployment projects, using slower technologies, would be cheaper.
Incumbent BT has already outlined plans for a FTTC/VDSL deployment, which would provide broadband speeds of around 55Mbps, rather than the 100Mbps speeds facilitated by other technologies.
The issue of deployment costs, particularly regarding civil infrastructure, remains prominent, and BT will be keen to see what conclusions are drawn by a second government-backed report on broadband deployment, due later this month.
