Format: Hardcover
In addition to being a great mystery, the humorous banter between Slate and Daphne as they try to one up each other is something kids will enjoy. Collard manages to work in numerous facts about Montana and some of its more well-known sites without bogging down the plot with information. Since their father's work together in the same field, the reader is also treated to geological facts-again without hampering the pace of the story. This is a quick read. The unfolding mystery has the reader turning the pages as she follows the clues along with Slate and Daphne.

I wasn't keen on the romance aspect of the book. Slate and Daphne are 12, so the pre-teen angst makes sense, but for my daughter, it was simply a distraction because she didn't truly understand it. It wasn't a huge part of the plot, however, so don't let the fear of an innocent attempt at a kiss or two sway you from purchasing the book.

The Governor's Dog Is Missing is a fun, fast-paced mystery boys and girls will enjoy.

I received a free hardcover copy of this book from the author. This review contains my honest opinions, for which I have not been compensated in any way.

The first dog of the state is missing, and two pre-teen detectives are on the case to find his whereabouts. "The Governor's Dog is Missing!" is the first entry into the Slate Stephens mystery series as he teams up with Daphne McSweeney to find the missing governor's dog, with the unusual name of Cat. "The Governor's Dog is Missing" is a charming mystery for young adult readers that they should relish.

With humor, mystery and pre-teen angst, The Governor's Dog will keep reader's attention from the first page to the last.

Sneed B. Collard III has an amazing talent for spinning intriguing, engrossing tales brimmed with education and learning. Mr. Collard will take the most reluctant of readers and turn them into enthusiastic readers with his books. I first fell in love with this author's work in Double Eagle and was thrilled to have this - The Governor's Dog is Missing, his first in the Slate Stephens Mysteries in hand and ready to delve into.

I must say that I was not a bit disappointed. In this series, we meet and get to know twelve-year-old Slate Stephens and his best friend, Daphne McSweeney. Their dads are partners and avid geologists who travel around the state, Slate and Daphne have been friends for several years and they spend much of their time together. When the Governor of Helena, Montana's dog goes missing, Slate and Daphne decide to try their hand at solving a mystery. Together they begin their investigation, including going to the State's Capital to question the Governor himself, as well as other political figures.

Throughout the story, Mr. Sneed sneaks in lessons of geology, politics, history and biology. Ahhh, the "sneaky learning" technique that I quite adore! Along with mystery and learning, readers will face that pre-teen angst that is so common in young people - the first twinges of liking girls. When Slate begins to feel differently about Daphne, he is angry with himself and confused with his feelings. This is his best friend since they were little kids, now why does giving Daphne a kiss seem so appealing?! How can he make it go away?

The Governor's Dog has a bit of everything.

When Slate and his friend, Daphne, find out that the governor’s Border collie, Cat, has gone missing, the two friends decide to take on the case. Their investigation begins at the Capital building in Helena, Montana, as they question the governor, his staff, and a suspicious Minority Leader. Then the clues to Cat’s whereabouts take them through several of Helena’s historical sites. However, several false leads, arguments, a stray dog, and an awkward kiss threaten to derail the case and their friendship. But the two sleuths persevere and their solid clues lead them to Glacier National Park. Cat was accidentally mistaken as a Karelian bear dog and used to help control the bears in the park. When the friends return Cat, Slate and Daphne are awarded a Citizen’s Service Medal and the $5,000 reward.
Collard has created an engaging, clean mystery series that both entertains and educates readers. Inside the page-turning whodunit, Collard has woven in important facts about Montana like what are Helena’s sites, how does Montana’s government work, and what rock formations are found in Glacier National Park, to name a few. Along with the amazing backdrop of Montana, Slate and Daphne are fun and true-to-life characters that successfully carry the whole story to the end. Slate’s narrative is witty, insightful, impulsive, and realistic, especially with his twelve-year-old beginning crush on Daphne. A great read for both boys and girls ages 10 and up. The next book in the Slate Stephens series is Hangman’s Gold.
