Book Description

January 15, 2006
On the banks of Gowanus Canal, a fetid stream in a squalid Brooklyn neighborhood, Hans Knudsen, son of a liberal Lutheran minister, seeks among the warring pressures of consubstantiation, transsubstantiation, and no-substantiation, the old world and the new-new world, the ideal and the real, the Cogito and the un-self, Martin Luther and Descartes, the abstract and the concrete, for a way into modern, post-religious culture, hope, and life.

5.0 out of 5 stars For literature lovers/connoisseurs, January 13, 2006
This review is from: Gowanus Canal, Hans Knudsen (Paperback)
I've read Gowanus Canal in galleys and then again in final print. It is wise, witty and original, in short, a classic in the making. In the words of Alfred Jarry: "Great works are not created great; they become so." I have no doubt that with time GC will gain in recognition and will acquire a very special kind of cult following. Buy it, you won't regret it.
