An Awesome Read, March 26, 2000
This review is from: Goya, Are You With Me Now? (Hardcover)
The cover of the book, a Black Painting by the Spanish artist Goya y Lucientes, is a rendition of horrifying faces that become an obsession with a famous photographer, Brand. After his suicidal death, his best friend, Ferris, retraces Brand's life from their early days in Bristol, Rhode Island, to Huntsville, Alabama, where Brand's father is a German rocket engineer. Ferris realizes Brand's struggle with his Nazi heritage and his relationship with an accepting mother. Later, visiting Ferris in Madrid, Brand discovers the black genius of Goya's paintings and becomes determined to bring that dark artistry to his photography. Ferris watches a talented man being distroyed by defeated aspirations of immortality. In this novel, H.E.Francis captures the most horrifying glimpse into the nature of his friend's character. In this moment, the reader discovers the answer to Goya, Are You With Me Now?. Strong descriptions and obsessive emotions deepen this interesting and unusual story that makes for an awesome read.
