Format: Hardcover
I ran across this book at the library where it was featured on a shelf. I have a 2 year old son who was adopted from Korea and I am Korean American and husband Caucasian. The book is about a little girl who is adopted from Korea by a Caucasian couple and how lonely and disconnected she feels. Her relationship with the family 'goyangi,' which means 'cat' in Korean, is the only thing that comforts her. The story is about how the cat disappears one day and this serves as a metaphor for the girl's adoption experience. I don't remember the words verbatim but the girl mourns because she misses the cat, her friends and Korea. It ends when the cat returns and the girl finally feels like she's 'home.' The story is simple and sweet and focuses on the girl's emotions. The illustrations are pretty and there are Korean words scattered throughout in the background like house, mom, cat, etc. It's a fantastic book for exploring the feelings a child has when adopted and although my son was adopted at a much younger age than the girl, it is still relevant. Not only that but it's a nice story that my son enjoys. I've returned it to the library 2 weeks ago and he still asks for it so I am buying the book.

Our 3 year old daughter loves this book. It deals very gently with transracial and transcultural adoption, focusing on the emotions of the young girl in the story as she adjusts to her new home and new family. The illustrations are beautiful and give a sense of warmth.

A must for any adoption family. It's tender, highlights adoption but it a gentle way. The illustrations are soft and warm. I wish there was one with a boy in it version. I loved the fact it teaches a few Korean words.
