I got this GPX brand portable dvd player a couple days ago and am so far satisfied. It does everything I expect it to. I would give this product 5 stars even were it not for one annoying feature, or rather the lack thereof. There is no menu button on the player itself! If you don't have the remote control or have lost it you won't be able to access the menu of your dvd while you're watching the feature. The only remedy I see to this is to skip to the very last chapter and fast forward to the very end forcing the menu to come up. But who wants to do this? I am a pretty responsible person and am anal about keeping the remote together with the player so this is not too big a problem for me given the remote continues to work. But I definitely see the potential for frustration.
Some things I like include the carrying case and the screen. The picture is pretty sharp, and the sound is decent. And I didn't expect there to be a carrying case in the box but it came with the player which is very nice. So overall this product is okay. I don't regret buying it but if I knew of the menu button issue beforehand I definitely would've picked a similar player that had such a button ON the player. And I don't use PAL discs so the player not being able to actually play those types of discs don't bother me one bit, false advertising or not. Too bad for that reviewer though.

I think we bought this 1.5+ years ago, and my daughter uses this all the time... and I mean all the time! It's still working fine, unlike the other one we got before that broke down after maybe a year. The screen is big and clear, sound ok (althought it always defaults to very loud... maybe bacuse I don't batteries anymore - see below). Small enough that we carry it all the time when tarveling (god send with kids).
The only down side is that battery doesn't hold changes anymore (like 5 min max now) after no that long... so it's always plugged in now. Having a hard time finding a replacement battery....

I was mailed two brand new units from a vendor, and both units were defective. This unit has problems. The first one wouldn't play DVD's, and the second jammed up and would not reboot. Then, after receiving a refund from the vendor, I didn't get all that I paid. Spend a little extra and save yourself the headache.

I used it three times and now I have all sort of problems like: it won't load, can't see the picture, it can't read the disk, it stops by itself, and the list goes on...Really bad for me...

Not Happy with my GPX8.5 portable dvd player PDL805,
This review is from: Gpx PDL805 8.5 Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
First I have to say that the specific model that I purchased ( GPX8.5 portable dvd player PDL805 )has some nice features but horrible instructions. If I hadn't noticed the box I would have not of fothe code conversion for the region changing. The paper instructions do not mention anything about it. Next it shows the buttons on the player and remote but doesn't explain how to use them , I know, you'd think it was self explanatory and for the most but it is, but what the heck is the 'TFT BUTTON' what does it do? Still working on that one. Then it doesn't explain charging the battery, like how long? how do I know when it's done charging? Will a green light come on when it's charged?
After I figured it was charged I set the code , which reset it's self twice. Then after 20 minutes of "This is a piece of sh@T" I thought I had it and put a regional 2 DVD in only for it to sit and do nothing. I tried a regional 1 DVD and it read it as 'error disc' I repeated this game for another 20 minutes until I was fed up with the whole thing and decided to ship it back . I settled down and thought I'd give it one more try, I had to be doing something wrong, right? No, I was doing everything right . I found that if I pushed a little harder one the DVD when I place it into the player it would then work, but not every time. I have to play with it taking the disc in and out and re starting it. I don't think it's good to have to push the dvd disk in place so hard like I'm having to do in order to get the thing to work. Plus and I find this a big plus, the thing is noisy. I can hear the motor running and it's worse with the head phones on. My old DVD player isn't like this. I am calling the company Monday to see what they will do about this unit. I must comment that the company the I purchased my DVD player from was Super! I order it Thursday and I got it on the following Saturday, now that is Great service !!

I really love this DVD player. I use it all the time and it works just fine, however, the remote control does not appear to work. I bought new batteries and put them in the device and it's not working. Other than that, I'm happy with it.

Disappointing DVD player,

I purchased the GPX DVD player in 2009, and it worked fine for about a year. About the time the warranty expired, it failed to read a disk or stopped repeatedly to read the disk - making it completely useless for watching on a TV. I have another DVD player (Panasonic), and it has worked perfectly for 3 years. By checking all disks on the Panasonic, I was able to confirm that it was the GPX player that had failed and not a problem with the disks.

Decent Portable DVD Player,

Pros: Good video and audio. good price for a 8.5" portable, car charger and carrying
bag a plus, everything working well, headphone jack, and a/v out to connect to TV Cons: Need to use remote to go to menu function, a little on bulky/heavy side( looks thin in photo but is very thick in size), did not recognize my CR-RW. Overall: For the price, a nice DVD, CD Music, and CD Photo Player.

I bought this item about 3 years ago. I used it maybe a total of 10-15 hours. I put it on the shelf and have not used since. I remembered I had it and charged the battery overnight. A disk was installed and it will not spin. An internet help site said the motor or motor control is likely bad. I would not buy another GPX product, especially this item.
