Grrreeeeat!,

Yep, I agree with everybody here, this is a great album! From beginning to end, a great slice of late 70's rock. A lot of great guitar work that never grows stale or boring, and every song is strong and complimentary to the other which is this album's strength. I think it's one of their best! Even if you're barely familiar with them, you wouldn't hurt yourself to start here.

Earring's Best,

This album simply rocks! The songs are great, the playing is great, and it should have been a bigger hit than it was. I saw them on the tour for this album and the songs were even better live! If you like Golden Earring, buy this one--you won't be disappointed!

I have heard that the band was not happy with this album. I sure don't know why! I'm one of their biggest fans and I love it. The last few months it's the one I've listened to the most. it has a harder edge to it, yet also some real catchy material. Leather is a slow moving rocker with great lyrics, cell 29 is haunting, Movin Down The line is an upbeat rocker. The best song is the title track Grab it For A Second. Great music and lyrics. Great album

Worth a listen for GE fans,

Like most of the late 70s Golden Earring albums, Grab It For A Second is like this: about half the songs are really good and the other half are very average. Barry Hay is still the hopeless romantic, young-boy-just-tryin'-to-get-some-love that he always was. For anyone interested in GE, this is a must have. It is good to see it back in print again in the US. Btw, these late 70s albums are way better than anything the GE has put out in the 80s or 90s.

This CD has been out of print for so long that I had to "remaster" my LP version to put onto CD! Quite possibly my favorite from G.E. Every song is a winner. The running order on the remastered CD is different that the original US release LP/CD. The original 'side 1' is a greatest hits side.
1.Movin Down Life 2.Against The Grain 3.Grab It For A Second 4.Cell 29 Those 4 songs are worth the price of admission alone. Great guitars, melodies and hooks. What more can a fan ask for?

I've loved this album ever since it came out in 1978. Although it's not as well known as many of the others there are some real jewels on it.Against the Grain, Movin Down Life,Cell 29, Grab It For a Second are all great cuts.Don't miss this one.

quality songwriting returning,

It really feels like Golden Earring got back on track after the questionable direction they took on Contraband. Grab It for a Second is completely awesome. The songs are energetic, the songwriting is a notch better than usual (but perhaps a tad worse than the masterpiece that is Switch- hey I can't help it, THAT album is awesome!) and it's just a solid overall listening experience. A step in the right direction.
My favorite is the most popular song here titled "Leather". At first I thought it was a cover version of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" but as I began to listen to the melody develop and shift into the chorus, I realized it *doesn't* stink like the Walsh song, lol. This is actually a fantastic song. It sounds sleazy, and the chorus is absolutely terrific. The verse melody grows on you significantly after a while, too. "Cell 29" seriously sounds like an 80's song a couple years before the 80's rock scene got underway. Everything from the guitar solos to the vocal melody really captures the feel and spirit of the 80's. How unusual. Not many bands were able to sound 80's *before* the 80's came around. Perhaps Joy Division, the Talking Heads and Blondie are exceptions... but I wasn't expecting Golden Earring to fall in that particular category as well. Then you have a song like "Tempting" that moves along at a pretty fast pace with a good amount of energy and yet, it feels almost like a country rocker, no kidding. Perhaps the country influence is extremely subtle, but I believe I hear it ever so slightly. Golden Earring wasn't ready to lay down and admit defeat just because the 80's were approaching. Instead, they acknowledged the times were changing in a hurry and found a way to blend in and write songs just as memorable as before. But these signs won't be heard in their entirely until thier next album. For now -on Grab It for a Second- you only encounter a few small signs that they are ever so slowly expanding and changing with the times, but in a positive way.

My Favorite Golden Earring Album...,
This review is from: Grab It for a Second (Audio CD)
I'm a rock musician, fan and collector. I've followed Golden Earring's career for a very long time and I really like this band.
Nearly every rock fan remembers when he or she first heard "Radar Love", "Candy's Going Bad", "Twilight Zone" and even "When the Lady Smiles". However, Golden Earring has a very long discography that includes some records that didn't really get the attention they deserved. "Grab It For A Second" is one of those albums. The whole album seems to flow naturally and has that characteristic Golden Earring sound from the 70's. The main thing I wanted to say about this album was that it rocks and it's really easy to listen to. My feeling is this album suffered from lack of record company promotion and maybe some other similar ills. I can remember when this album came out, and there were several good albums by many other good bands that didn't do too well. So, I believe it to be a symptom of what was happening at the time in radio, etc. In any case, the song "Grab It For A Second" is my favorite, and it is typically competent, emotional, hook-y hard rock for Golden Earring. In my opinion, this band and their music never received their due recognition. Sure, I love "Moontan", but I think "Grab It For A Second" has to be my favorite Golden Earring album, followed by "Switch".

AWESOME!!!!,
This review is from: Grab It for a Second (Audio CD)
This album followed the steam they created with the double LIVE of 1977....It single handedly captures the definitive GE sound better than anything short of 1973's MOONTAN...NO PROMISES NO DEBTS and PRISONER OF THE NIGHT follow the trend closely...Pushing the solid basic rock drive (minus the horns that made their appearance on some later albums)that was their live trademark sound.
These would be the efforts that any new GE fan would want to goive listen to first.

This was released with a song on it titled Roxanne, the same time The Police got a hit out of theirs. What an injustice!!! GE's Roxanne is leagues better than the Police's. Every time I hear the Police version on the radio, I think how GE got robbed. This album is a 5-star great. Enjoy |
