I used to buy Kirkland brand tinned brisket at Costco. It was great to use for a quick meal; very lean, tasty, and not too expensive. When Kirkland discontinued it, I wanted to find a substitute and stumbled across this. Soon as I got it, I tried it...and wished I hadn't bought it. The mean had more fat on it than it should have, and I even found a bit of bone in the can. I figured it might be a fluke, and was just that one can. Not so. The second can was the same, once again including a little chip of bone. I dumped the rest and haven't bought anything from them since. Maybe I had bad luck, but if you buy this, be sure to put it in a colander and REALLY rinse it and sift it.

I thought the ground beef was excellent (for canned ground beef--don't expect it to be like fresh)... I thought it was very tasty and very lean compared to Yoder's brand (which was extremely fatty and not nearly as nice a flavor). The canned beef chunks were also very tasty and lean. Lehman's may be one of the best beef chunks, but Grabill's is also very good. The "slimy stuff" one reviewer referred to is simply beef jelly/gelatin. All meats when cooked with bone produce gelatin ... boil a whole chicken or turkey and then put the broth in the fridge to cool, the broth will turn to jelly because of the gelatin that leached from the bones (gelatin in made from bones)... of course, it will melt and return to liquid at room temperature or when heated... open a can of beef consumme... it is as much jelly as a can of cranberry jelly... the gelatin from the bones in the meat does this. Usually city-folk are ignorant when it comes to plants and animals--from which our food is made. This is the first time I've heard of one being ignorant concerning canned food. Maybe it was the first time he opened a can of real meat. Any meat may have a tiny bit of bone in it. I don't know why people dump or throw food out just because they don't like it... what a waste... feed it to your dog or cat, give it to a church, soup kitchen, retirement home, homeless shelter, food bank. Waste not want not is a motto we should revive; it is wasteful disrespect and ungratefulness that has caused our landfills to be over full, and part of the reason for our national debt. STOP THE WASTE. Don't throw something out. It is most certain you can find SOMEONE who will appreciate what you consider "beneath you."

Just tried my first can for lunch and ditto to what the last review said. Lots of fat and some slimy stuff that I'm not sire what it was. Definitely not the high end beef I was expecting but then again the price is pretty low too.

Obviously, I didn't purchase from Amazon (they don't have it!). I bought a sample pack to try and so far tried the Beef Chunks variety. Another reviewer mentioned the "jelly" in the can, which is true. When the contents of the can are heated, the "jelly" melts and you find that it is just the natural juices of the beef.

Whenever I make a roast, I do it in a crock pot along with a chopped up onion and some salt and pepper. The heated contents of the can tastes exactly like the roasts I've done in the crock pot. I served the Grabill beek chunks (heated up and with some onion powder) over some mashed potatoes to an unsuspecting friend. She thought that it was a roast that I had made rather than something out of a can. I don't know how it gets any better than that.

I plan to buy a case of the Beef Chunks direct from GrabillMeats.com to include in my long term storage.
