Book Description

What would you do if abuse forced you to run away from home at the age of sixteen? What if you had been hidden away all of your life in a reclusive cult, and knew little to nothing about the outside world? Would you know how to live on your own? Where to go? Whom you could trust?

Inspired by author Judith Nelson's own experiences, this is the story of Grace McGonnell. Raised within an isolated cult of religious fundamentalists, Grace is pressured by her controlling mother to marry a fellow cult member over twice her age. When her protests fall on deaf ears, she and her friend Lydia run away to Los Angeles, where they are forced into a horrifying world of prostitution. Years later, Grace, now a successful attorney in Atlanta, is shocked to learn that her sixteen year old niece, still trapped within the cult, similarly is being forced to marry an older man – and that Grace's mother, once again, is involved. Grace is determined to save her niece at any cost. Even if it means confronting a past that she would do anything to forget. Even if it means revealing, for the first time, the pain of that hidden past to her husband and children.

The result is a stunning story of survival and triumph. A story of learning how we each should live and choose to treat others, regardless of the circumstances in which we were raised. And ultimately, a story of the power of love to conquer pain, isolation and fear.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not an inspired read September 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book from inspired reads. They need to vet their products better if they consider this in any way an inspired read. First of all it was full of foul language, but to be fair with this review I finished the book. There was never any thing remotely to do with the kind of grace I expect from inspired reads. The closest thing was the protagonist in the book was named Grace. I feel deeply grieved for young women trapped in religious cults but that in no way excuses the story and language in this "inspired read". Does the author have any idea what the grace of God really means? I know this was fiction but if you want to be inspired by young women who have come out of cults there are actually books out there with true stories of God's amazing grace. Not stories that end with Grace hating her mother and wishing her the worst possible outcome in her life. Grace, I don't think so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book! February 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was wonderful. It was constructed with flashes from the main character's present and her past, each giving a little more of the story. That sort of structure is difficult to execute well, but in this case it was captivating. I was riveted wanting to know how things would play out next, even if I had a general idea, the details were so interesting. I've read "escape from a cult" books before, but none of these gave so thorough a picture, while also keeping the story high on action. Some of the timing in differences of how many years things had been was off, but that was a very minor issue more of math than of story line. I highly recommend this read.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT book January 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was hard to put down - it is such a great read & touches the heart at so many levels. It is difficult to read & know that what the author writes is so true & that young women continue to be subjected to this kind of treatment in the real world - maybe even in YOUR neighborhood! I loved this story & felt the author could pull the reader into a heart connection with the characters of the story, especially Grace.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story
I really enjoyed this book. The only thing I did not care for was the profanity. I felt the story could have been just as dramatic without it.
