A candidate for best new artist of the year?, November 14, 2003
This review is from: Grace Like Rain (Audio CD)
Todd Agnew caught my attention right away the first time I heard "This Fragile Breath" on the radio. The song is powerful, both in its music and the very moving, deeply spiritual lyrics. When these were coupled with Todd's deep, slightly raspy voice it was too much to resist. This CD suddenly leaped onto my "must have" list, and shortly thereafter was added to my collection. I had no idea I would like the rest of the CD this much!
Todd's music spans a range of "rock" music styles, from the somber, heavy guitar minor strains of "This Fragile Breath" to his rather jazzy arrangement of the popular worship song "Kindness". In between are the very contemporary sounds of "You Are" and "Romans 12:1" (which includes a wonderful worship chorus), to the soul-stirring "Shepherd." Also included are two songs about deep contrition, repentence and forgiveness in "Still Here Waiting" and "Wait for Your Rain" -- both of which will hit you right where you live and bring a lump to your throat. Most of these songs draw heavily on the minor keys to produce a sound that it as once very enjoyable but also very conducive to deep introspection. These qualities, as well as the relatively easy guitar chord arrangements, make them very "playable" for small group worship settings.
Finally, to put a capper on an already great CD (as if more were needed), Todd includes contemporary remakes of some old favorites. The title track, "Grace Like Rain", takes the old classic "Amazing Grace", restyles it in Todd's unique manner, and adds a rousing chorus between the verses -- a treat that is definitely NOT to be missed. "Amazing Grace" will never sound the same to you again. He also does a similar remake of "Come Ye Sinners", not changing the lyrics but sticking with the minor-key, heavy guitar sound that characterizes much of the CD.
Although a couple of the tracks are a little too "stylized" for my personal tastes, I don't think that detracts one little bit from the overall quality of this production. If you're a lover of contemporary Christian music, you're going to be especially pleased with this offering. I can't wait to see more from this guy.

Great Voice, Edifying Lyrics, Worship All The Way !!, July 26, 2005
This review is from: Grace Like Rain (Audio CD)
Probably not approved for fundamentalist-types with its power-rock driven melodies, but this CD grows on you more and more over time. This CD definitely turns the heart toward worship. I wish worship like this would go on at my church !!
Todd has a great voice and edifying lyrics that will get you down-right emotional about worshipping the Lord. I hope to hear more of this young talent in the coming years.
Standouts include 'This Fragile Breath', 'Grace Like Rain', 'Romans 12:1' (The chorus should be a required worship song in every church !!), 'You Are' & 'Only One Thing'.
Get this CD, turn up the volume and turn you heart to God and worship !!
Highly Recommended.

Awesome!!, March 3, 2004

I heard Todd live at Winter Jam in Cleveland in February and had to have his CD. When I went back to his table, it was sold out and I didn't waste time finding it when I got home. I am not disappointed. The new version of Amazing Grace is just beautiful - even my 9 year old daughter thought so! I also love the song, "Shepherd". This whole CD has made me reflect deeply on God's redeeming love for us - Todd words things in such a thought-provoking way. And, on the songs that are remakes of popular hymns, the emphasis he provides and his style makes you think of those songs in a different way. God's hand is with this guy - I'll be watching for new releases!!
