3.0 out of 5 stars ApologetiX Needs to Apologize

Re-writing lyrics to existing songs is a time-honored practice: the MAD Magazine parodies of Broadway and movie musicals and the "filk" tradition within science-fiction fandom and among Creative Anachronists are among the best-known examples. Well, there's another place where it's becoming increasingly popular, and that's in contemporary Christian music,...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun CD, January 21, 2008

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Grace Period (Audio CD)
'Grace Period' combines solid Christian lyrics with the sounds of well known songs to make a very fun package.

For those who are unfamiliar with them, this group parodies songs in popular music from various genres and does it with Christian lyrics. The songs generally have Scriptural references for the listener to review. Oftentimes they sound very much like the original except the words.

This particular CD parodies songs from artists as diverse as The Beach Boys, The Village People, Simon and Garfunkel, Nickelback, and Bruce Springsteen.

There are several very good songs on this album. Many are very funny. All of them have a sound message. Among my favorites on this CD are revised versions of the following songs: 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia' by The Charlie Daniels Band, 'Drops of Jupiter' by Train, 'Follow Me' by Uncle Kracker, 'Renegade' by Styx, and The Who's 'My Generation'.

If you have not heard anything by Apologetix, you are missing something very good. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anything Apologetix is EXCELLENT!, June 19, 2009

Apologetix "Grace Period" is my favorite album to date. Granted, I'm still building my collection, I only found out about this band about a year and a half ago. This has more of my favorites than the others, you know, the songs I grew up with, the songs that are familiar to me. Among my favorites on this album:
"Corinthians" (Parody of "In the End" by Linken Park)
"Cornelius" (Parody of "Cecilia" by Simon and Garfunkel)
"I'm a Receiver" (Parody of I'm a Believer" by the Monkees and Smash Mouth
"YHWH" (Parody of "YMCA" by the Village People)
"Devil Went Down to Jordan" (Parody of "Devil Went Down to Georgia" by The Charlie Daniels Band
"Drop of Lucifer" (Parody of "Drops of Jupiter" by Train
"Born Above" (Parody of "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen)
"Follow Me" (Parody of "Follow Me" by Uncle Kracker
"Don't Fear the People" (Parody of "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult
"Lemonade" (Parody of "Renegade" by Styx)
"How You Rewind Me" (Parody of "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback)
"Regeneration" (Parody of "My Generation" by the Who)
"Love the Jews" (Parody of "Love Me Do" by the Beatles)
"Baa! We're Lambs! (Parody of "Barbara Ann" by the Beach Boys)

The remaining songs on this album were really good too and I recognized most of them from the radio, I was just more familiar with the songs listed above.

These guys sound like the real original bands that they parody. I would love to see a music video or a "behind the scenes" on "The Devil Went Down to Jordan"--whoever played the fiddle on that one has some serious skills!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a sermon in each song, July 5, 2007
This review is from: Grace Period (Audio CD)
Apologetix is GREAT. Everything is Legal and is not theft unlike the previous review would lead you to believe. God has guided these unique individuals to preach through the use of recognizable songs. Taking out the messages I don't want my kids to hear and putting in a christian one. You can take the songs which somtimes mention the bible refrence and teach a lesson with it! Every one of the Apologetix CD's are great and this one is no different. Great Content!!!

Our whole household enjoyed listening to this after dinner, especially since our teens were familiar with many of the original songs.

3.0 out of 5 stars ApologetiX Needs to Apologize, November 17, 2006
This review is from: Grace Period (Audio CD)

Re-writing lyrics to existing songs is a time-honored practice: the MAD Magazine parodies of Broadway and movie musicals and the "filk" tradition within science-fiction fandom and among Creative Anachronists are among the best-known examples. Well, there's another place where it's becoming increasingly popular, and that's in contemporary Christian music, where ApologetiX is probably the most air-played group doing it.

It takes a lot of technical proficiency to perform in such a variety of musical styles as is required for an album such as GRACE PERIOD, and there's no doubt that these guys have it, as they cover songs by The Monkees, Bruce Springsteen, the Village People, Blue Oyster Cult, the Beach Boys, Nirvana, the early Beatles, and several others, always rewriting the lyrics to make their Christian theological point (although how they could possibly think it was necessary to rewrite Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" to make it *more* Christian is beyond me).

In the copying, however, they lose a full review point with me. While the courts have long held that rewriting lyrics for printed parodies, as MAD does, is fair use, so far as I know (I'm not a lawyer) the selling of a recording of those lyrics played with the *original_music* still requires a payment of royalty to the authors of the *music*, and ApologetiX specifically states on the album cover that they don't do that.

If you're a fundamentalist or Pentecostal Christian, and you can live with the ethical compromise that this purchase apparently rewards a violation of the Commandment against (intellectual property) Theft, then this is a good listen.
