Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set in a fictional seaside village, this insipid romantic suspense novel weaves together the disparate lives and times of Zoe Barlow and Rosalina Santos. Zoe is a mother of two whose existence is turned upside-down when she discovers the skeletal remains of four babies in the attic of her house. Rosalina, whose story takes place 50 years earlier, shocks her Portuguese community by leaving her devoted husband for an artist with the appropriately soap-opera-ish name of Fenris Boak. When Zoe's infant son disappears, the tales interlock to reveal secrets about the two women and the town of Grace Point. LeClaire ( Land's End ) peppers her prose with references to phantoms and ghosts in apparent hopes of sending shivers up the spine. Unfortunately, her characters are as insubstantial as the netherworld she invokes. Despite the mounting number of dead bodies and Rosalina's affair, few moments of passion and few thrills are offered here.

From Library Journal

The Barlows move to the quiet New England seaside town of Grace Point to escape the emotional scars of husband Jake's escapade with a teenager in New Haven, but their newly calm life is disrupted when Zoe and daughter Emily discover four infant skeletons neatly wrapped in hat boxes and stored in their attic. Then the Barlows' infant son Adam is kidnapped. Is there a connection? What happened 50 years ago, when Rosalie Santos's father lived in their house? As the murder/kidnap investigation intensifies, suspicions focus on the Grace Point Portuguese fishing community of 1940. Although LeClaire ( Every Mother's Son , Bantam, 1985) poses some easily answered questions, she also tells a good story, and a passionate romance between two characters generates enough interest to keep readers hooked until the final twists. An entertaining romantic suspense novel, recommended for summer reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful, entertaining, thought-provoking, October 30, 2001

This review is from: Grace Point (Hardcover)
Although I love reading, often I don't have enough time to sit down and concentrate on a book; yet Grace Point is so enthralling, so suspenseful that I discovered I'd read it in just a matter of days. With alternating POV characters and two different time periods, this novel keeps the reader wondering what will happen next and how the two circumstances are connected . . . in the end, the stories were connected in a way I didn't predict. Fantastic! LeClaire is a fabulous writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story, May 4, 2007
This is the story of two women, Rosalina and Zoe, who both lived in Grace Point. It tells their life stories and discusses their relationships with their families. Rosalina and Zoes life begins to entwine when four infant skeletons are found in Zoes attic. Even though Zoe was not alive when the babies were left there Rosalini was and the mystery begins. I purchased this book in 1992 when it came out in hardcover and have read it several times and plan on reading it again in the future. If you can find a copy it is suspenseful and worth reading.
