Review

Pastor Donna Schaper takes what is all around us, namely food and eating food, and joins it to what is deeply but invisibly within us, a hunger for meaning and joy. She develops an imagination that lives the unity between the inner and outer: namely, prayer. Read this witty and generous book. There is not a dull sentence in it; [the] words will quicken your taste buds and revive your spirit.
--Eugene H. Peterson, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College --Wipf and Stock Publishers

There is so much we need and want in life, but in Grace at Table, Pastor Donna teaches us about the value of appreciating everyday graces. The book is full of so many lessons: how to pause before eating to be thankful, how to find and enjoy beauty in the ordinary, how to be thankful even when the ordinary does not appear so beautiful. Among other things, the book includes lots of brief prayers, which those seeking to learn how to pray can use a springboard for a more prayerful life. The book is also funny, and candid and Pastor Donna writes in very accessible voice which while simple, is full of profound wisdom. I loved this book and highly recommend it, especially for parents in teaching their children about the beauty of recognizing grace at the table.

Dr. Schaper is a talented storyteller. In Grace at Table, she takes you through a journey with her relationship with food, with family, with being thankful towards it all. I'm an atheist, and I still found plenty in this book to enjoy. It's not just about praying, but also being mindful of your meals, and what it means to really sit down and savour a meal. It's a quick read; I managed to power through it in about an hour or two. Great for all who love food. Great for all who love to enjoy food. Great for all.
