About the Author

J. Ellsworth Kalas is Senior Professor of Homiletics at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He formerly served as President of Asbury. Kalas served for thirty-eight years as a pastor in four churches in Wisconsin and Ohio. He has published more than thirty books, including Grace in a Tree Stump: Old Testament Stories of God's Love and Preaching the Calendar: Celebrating Holidays and Holy Days, both available from WJK.

J. ELLSWORTH KALAS is professor of Homiletics and has been part of the faculty at Asbury Theological Seminary since 1993, after thirty-eight years as a United Methodist pastor and five years in evangelism with the World Methodist Council. He has been a presenter on DISCIPLE videos, is the author of the Christian Believer study, and has written more than thirty books, including the popular "Back Side" series and Longing to Pray: How the Psalms Teach Us to Talk with God.

If you enjoy Bible stories, you'll love Kalas's wonderfully witty yet incisive style of presenting the often-overlooked "twist" on a familiar subject. This book was not only fun to read but made me stop and think twice about stories I thought I knew quite well.

Our Sunday School class includes three generations. We are all very happy with the book, and our discussions have become quite lively and loud. Some of the others have asked what we are doing in our class because we can be heard around the building during class time. My son-in-law had recommended this book, and we're very glad he did.
