Book Description

May 15, 2000
This book is about grace the unmerited favor of God and the many ways that God has provided for grace to reach us. The author does more than speak of abstract theological concepts; he opens for us a door to his own life, his own personality, and his own experiences. Through them he shows how God enters into the lives of men and women, imparting grace to them through the instruments of the sacraments and the sacramentals.

"This book presents a personally compelling, sacramentally sound exposition on the means of grace." -- Dr. Thomas A. Langford, Late Professor of Theology, Duke University

From the Author

This book has been written for you. It matters not if you are laity or clergy; it matters not if you have an extensive background in the study of theology, or just have a burning desire to find out more about the grace of Jesus Christ if youve clicked on this book, its for you. This is not a work of "high-powered" academic scholarship, nor is it intended to be devotional reading, though one may find a bit of both here. Rather, in the pages of this book I have attempted to translate the strange, sometimes confusing, often annoying complexity of much academic scholarship into terms and expressions, stories and concepts that both those in the pulpit and those in the pew can understand and apply for everyday Christian living. If I have succeeded in this endeavor, then this book will have achieved its purpose.

More About the Author

The Reverend Dr. Gregory S. Neal is the Senior Pastor of St. Stephen United Methodist Church of Mesquite, Texas, and Rector of Grace Incarnate Ministries. He is a graduate of Southern Methodist University with the B.A. in History, Russian Language, and Theology, Duke University with the M.Div. in Theology and Biblical Studies, and Trinity Graduate College with the Ph.D in Systematic Theology and New Testament Textual Criticism

Rev. Neal is an ordained United Methodist Elder and member of the North Texas Conference of the UMC. While trained as a scholar and theologian, Dr. Neal is nevertheless called to the pastoral ministry of the Church of Jesus Christ. During his 20 years in ministry he has served as Pastor of several Churches in North Carolina and North Texas, including First Celeste (1992 - 1993), Cockrell Hill (1993-1996), First Trenton/Blue Ridge (1996-1997), Beverly Drive (1997-2001), and First Seagoville (2001-2007). Currently, Greg serves as the Senior Pastor of St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Mesquite, Texas.

Rev. Neal has served on several boards and committees of the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church, including several District Boards of Ordained Ministry and the Division for National and World Outreach of the North Texas Conference Board of Global Ministries. From 1994 - 2003 Dr. Neal taught the General Board of Global Ministry's Schools of Christian Mission, serving as a Study Leader in the Mission Schools of Missouri East, Missouri West, Oklahoma, Nebraska, North Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Virginia. He also served as the Dean of the North Texas Conference Cooperative Mission School from 1996-1997. As a recognized speaker on several theological topics, including Sacramental Theology, Neal has lead numerous spiritual retreats, revivals, and study seminars for groups all across the United States. Among those who have sought him out for such services have been the United Methodist Women, the United Methodist Men, Clergy groups from several denominations, and dozens of local churches.

Greg is a past member of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. A member of the Order of Saint Luke in the early 1990s he served as Prior of the Duke Divinity Chapter. His love of liturgy and the contemplative life, as well as his keen interest in the ecumenical movement, led to his being invited to become the first United Methodist Associate of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist, an Anglican Monastic community which has fed him spiritually for 20 years.

Dr. Neal is interested in many fields of Theological, Historical, and Biblical study, including Pneumatology, Christology, Philosophical Theology, New Testament Canonical and Textual Criticism, Pauline, Johannine, and Synoptic Studies, but his field of specialization is Sacramental Theology. He has a love of languages, and especially the study of linguistic theory. Over the past 25 years he has been a student of 10 languages: Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Coptic, Akkadian, Old Church Slavonic, Russian, and Theological German. Recently, Dr. Neal has begun a study of Dutch, and he is beginning to work on modern Hebrew. Some day he hopes to study one of the Far Eastern languages, like Japanese.

Greg is also fascinated with computers and the internet, and enjoys designing websites as a means of furthering his ministry. Rev. Neal has been a Macintosh person since the mid-1980s, and prior to the advent of the Mac he used one of several Apple II computers. Hence, it should come as no surprise that he doesn't use a Windows PC.

Like many ministers, Greg is an avid reader of many different literary genre. In addition to the theological and biblical fields, he particularly loves Science Fiction and Fantasy, his favorite authors being Robert A. Heinlein, James P. Hogan, Larry Niven, and Andre Norton. He also enjoys Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" series, the "Father Dowling Mystery" novels of Ralph McInnery, and the works of Mark Twain. Check out his Bookshelf for works of the Biblical, Theological, Historical, and Scientific genre.

Dr. Neal loves motion pictures of many different kinds, including classic films and current releases. His favorite classic-movie actor is William Powell and his all-time favorite actresses are Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn. Being a Science Fiction fan, it should not be a surprise to anyone that Greg is also a fan of Star Trek, Stargate SG1, and the new Battlestar Galactica.

Greg is also an avid world traveler, and especially loves ocean-going vessels and cruise ships. The Holland America Line is his Cruise Line of choice; although he has traveled on ships of other Lines, he particularly loves the charm and old-world grace and high level of service that is provided by their officers and crew. Thus far, he has enjoyed well over 200 days aboard HAL ships as a passenger, and even more days as a Volunteer Chaplain, and looks forward to many more years of ocean voyages on the decks of HAL's "Damships."

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Helpful and Informative, January 25, 2001

Chris (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Grace Upon Grace (Paperback)
I learned a lot from this book. It's not just for Methodists, though I'm sure they could learn a lot from the writings of one of their own theologians. No, this book is written for all Christians who are interested in leaning about the love of God and the power that God has for rebuilding our lives. While it is written from the protestant/Catholic perspective, I think that even Baptists and other such Christians could learn a lot from this book. Neal explains their beliefs too.

I guess that's what I found most impressive about this book. I learned about the differences between those Christians and Churches that look upon the Sacraments as our works -- what the Reverend Neal calls "Ordinance" Christians -- and those who think of them as instruments or "means of grace" through which God's love and unearned favor are received -- what he terms "Sacramental" Christians. I discovered that, even though there are major differences, there are also many important ideas upon which we agree, and I found that helpful.

Additionally, I especially liked how Rev. Neal shared his own life experiences of God's Grace. He brought a personal face to an otherwise difficult to comprehend topic in a way which tore down the barriers between an academic mind, like Neal's, and the mind of an simple Christian, like me.

If you really want to know about how the Grace of God functions in your life, or if you've ever wanted to have a more complete understanding of Baptism, Communion, and the other sacramental acts, you should buy and read this book. It's really a treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!, April 27, 2002

This review is from: Grace Upon Grace (Paperback)
Out of the several dozen new books which I read in the course of a year, there are always two or three which make me sit back and reconsider everything that I have learned before. Thus far this year the only book that has done this for me has been Dr. Gregory Neal's incredible volume: "Grace Upon Grace."

I bought it on the suggestion of a friend, and I quickly found why she loved it so. Dr. Neal's simple, straightforward approach to complex theology is a breath of fresh air. He is largely unconcerned with trying to impress his readers with a vast vocabulary of difficult words, but rather focuses on explaining the field of Sacramental Theology in ways which make the subject come alive for the average Christian reader. Rare is the book which can do this, and Grace Upon Grace does it better than most.

For the simple beauty of the written word, Dr. Neal's book should be commended. For an excellent, theologically and Biblically sound study on the nature of Baptism, Communion, and the other Means of Grace, this book cannot be beat. If you're a Methodist, you MUST read this book. If you're any kind of catholic Christian, this book will help you greatly. Even if you're from the non-Sacramental tradition, you'll learn a LOT about why you think the way you do from reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book!, January 25, 2001
By
This review is from: Grace Upon Grace (Paperback)
Over the past 25 years I've read a LOT of books about the Sacraments. With only a few exceptions, most of these books are either way too deep for the average Christian to find helpful, or they're so empty of ideas as to be meaningless. Not so with Dr. Neal's book.

Grace Upon Grace is one of the best theological books I've read in a long time. Written by a gifted, articulate, and obviously well-educated Methodist scholar, this book deals with the doctrines of Grace and Faith as they function in the lives of the people of God. The principle question that Dr. Neal addresses is "how is Grace received?" Neal's answer is simple, elegant, and totally acceptable by both Catholics and Protestants: by faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, communicated to us through the "means of grace."

I found Dr. Neal's approach refreshing for its simplicity and brilliance: we need instruments to do most things in this life, from changing the channel on the TV to sending an email to cooking a steak; likewise, we need instruments to receive the Grace which God wants to give us. Through the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism, through such means of grace as Forgiveness, Healing, Worship, Scripture, Fellowship, Foot Washing, Ordination, and Marriage, Dr. Neal sketches a wonderful outline of the instruments that God uses to communicate his love and favor -- the Real Presence of Jesus -- to us. And, he does this in a way that makes these ideas clear and meaningful for us today.

In short, I loved this book. Sure, there are some things in this book which I'm still not sure I agree with, but that's okay ... Dr. Neal's clear, compelling, well-constructed arguments, not to mention his superb, easy-to-read poetry and prose, makes this an excellent book with which to wrestle and pray. Anyone who wants to understand an area of Theology that is so frequently neglected by the popular Christian authors of today should buy this book.
