Book Description

Giovanna Matthews has an acceptable life in London with her own flat, a good job, and recent engagement to the son of a Scottish landowner. But not long after her engagement to Alan, news of Aunt Grace’s death hits Giovanna like a red double decker bus. Ignoring Alan’s pleas to stay, she bundles her dog and suitcase into a rusty Volkswagen and drives to Aunt Grace’s cottage on the Cornish coast where Giovanna had spent childhood summers with her cousin. Putting her aunt’s affairs in order is further complicated when Giovanna discovers the local constabulary has its own view on Aunt Grace’s demise - A view that Giovanna vows to challenge. Unless she can discover how her aunt died and find her missing cousin quickly, she stands to lose both her inheritance and Alan.

Like the old harbor wall, Giovanna’s feet sink into the sand and it becomes more difficult to leave a village where she is accepted as part of their “family.” There’s Mrs. Penrose with her flyaway gray hair and floral wardrobe; The sensible Mrs. Trewellyn who owns the grocery store; Holly, a long time friend and confidant; and Miss Brea who learned to drive in her retirement years. Self-centered, Alan threatens to break off their engagement if Giovanna doesn’t return to London. Should she stay and solve the mystery surrounding her aunt’s death or return to London and her fiancé?

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming English cozy mystery December 29, 2010
This is a charming cozy mystery. It takes place in a small English coastal town with the sudden death of an elderly resident named Grace. Grace's niece Giovanna Matthews drives to the village with her trusty dog Daisy to deal with her aunt's last wishes. She is forced to leave her fiance Alan who is none too happy at her departure. When Gia arrives in the village, she finds her aunt's home and affairs not at all in good shape. Particularly disturbing is the fact that the police have labeled the woman's death a suicide, a finding that Gia believes totally contradictory to her beloved aunt's character. With the help of some former friends and neighbors, Gia decides to investigate her aunt's mysterious death.

Gia's investigation leads her to uncover some mystifying family secrets and causes her to suspect that, not only did Aunt Grace not commit suicide, but that it is likely that she was murdered. Along the way, Gia meets many charming village characters--and a bevy of local animals--all of which she adopts, or rather which adopt her. I found this a thoroughly delightful and engaging mystery with many likeable characters. The author writes with a warm style that makes you believe you are truly living on the coast of England.

5.0 out of 5 stars All is not what it seems December 15, 2009
In the tranquil community of Lowenna, amid Lowenna Antiques, King William's Pub, and the knitting and quilting circle, a murderer resides. Or is Giovanna's aunt's death of an entirely different nature -- the inspector's solution to a quickly closed case? In A Graceful Death, Ms. Summerville creates a reading experience comforting on the outside but compelling at its heart. The world of Lowenna is truly a world you will want to relax into. Just remember not to get too comfortable.

3.0 out of 5 stars could be better February 9, 2012

Though it kept me interested the entire time, it was also a little like the author was in a hurry to get to the end, too

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY enjoyable January 26, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this humorous mystery/romance.
The antics of the characters, the detail to plot .and background, the nuances.....terrific.
This small town would not seem to be large enough for the relationships and mishaps that occurred, would it?
After all is said and done...Will this author be able to make it all come together?
Read and see.
Thanks for sharing your story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable April 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed reading A Graceful Death even though I found the main character a bit naive, in particular about Alan. But the story holds together nicely, it's well-written and unfolds at a good pace.
