Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-- A wonderful story about an elderly groundhog who does not realize how much he has helped the animals around him. He writes a farewell letter to them, and dies. His best friend, the fox, finds it and delivers the sad news. They all sit together remembering the special times they had had with their old friend. Illustrated in pastel colored pencils, this story can be tied into themes of saying good-bye, impending death, and just leaving, such as in divorce. An important addition to most collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Touching Tale of Giving and Loss, December 12, 2000

If you enjoy children's literature, if you have a heart, and if you find it as difficult as I do to explain loss to children, then buy this book. It is amazingly sensistive in how it deals with death and how what we have given to others allows us to live on after we are gone. I get teary-eyed every time I read this. I teach 4th and 5th grade and I am in a counseling program. Counselors and teachers alike should all have this book in their libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all family's libraries!, November 26, 2000

A beautifully written story that deals elegantly with death. I read this to my students every year around the Day of the Dead as a way of remembering our loved ones that have passed on. The characters remember their deceased friend Badger as they share all that he taught them. It sets the example of remembering our friends and families with joy as we remember all that we have learned from them. In doing so, their memory lives on.
