Book Description

Steeg Patterson believed in three things: God, Country, and Gracie Ofterdahl's love. But as early as the ripe old age of 18, he was certain someone or something was conspiring against him. After high school, the draft board almost corrals him into the Army. When he joins the Navy instead, his first duty station--the U.S.S. Hornet--almost kills him. As war and duty pull him from everything he knows, he trusts Christ to protect the only relationship he would ever want, only to have every prayer go unanswered. Events far beyond his control carry him into the middle of the most momentous technological accomplishment in human history, and his personal life crumbles. Through it all, the sometimes funny, sometimes tragic turns his life takes show him who's really in charge of everything. And, try as he might, he doesn't like it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gracie's Ghost, March 25, 2008
This review is from: Gracie's Ghost: The Haunting (Paperback)
I wasn't sure if this book was going to be just another ghost book about the USS Hornet. To my suprise i learned alot about One of her Sailors, his life growing up in the Navy,The love of his life and the Daily operations of the Hornet, while waiting for the first men to return from the Moon.
I really liked it.
It has many twist and turns in it.
This book brought back many memories of myself growing up in the Vietnam Era. Times were different then.
The Cover is well done an eye catcher, and the price is Fine.
This is a must read for the people who grew up in the 60's

4.0 out of 5 stars True love and astronauts?!, April 5, 2008
This review is from: Gracie's Ghost: The Haunting (Paperback)
It's a coming-of-age story about two people who love each other but who are destined to lose it all. She goes to college, he goes into the Navy, helps in the Apollo 11 astronaut recovery, almost gets killed, and holds onto his memory of her to help him survive. That may sound a little goofy and tragic, but the story is really funny and yet very touching. I really liked it. Anyone who reads it will be able to relate, laugh, and maybe cry if only a little. It sure made me think of garbage cans and parking lots in an entirely new light.

2.0 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone, July 2, 2008
This review is from: Gracie's Ghost: The Haunting (Paperback)
I was a little put off by the very detailed description of the aircraft carrier that the main character, Steeg, is stationed on, but perhaps that is more appealing to male readers. I also did not come of age during the Vietnam years, so can't relate to that personally, but it was interesting to read about the point of view of an 18-year old at the time.

However, no matter what your age or gender, we can all relate to the heartache of lost love and having to make decisions that will affect us for the rest of our lives, much as the main characters had to.

Being from Minnesota, I also found the references to familiar locations amusing, as well.
