These two beautifully illustrated books showcase ideas for creating successful environments for entertaining. Design editor and stylist for british Vogue and other magazines, Caselton focuses on table settings and service pieces for theme meals, such as a tea-and-roses tea and a Mediterranean lunch, and the types of tableware to use for each outing. Included are a few how-to projects for decorating the table, such as making napkin rings and arranging flowers. An appendix shows place settings for American formal, English formal, and other dining and the variety of glasses and flatware to use. Von Furstenberg, whose previous books were Beds (Bantam, 1991) and The Bath (Random House, 1993), continues to give a glimpse of the world of socialites and celebrities, this time concentrating on their dining tables and how they entertain. For each visit, she includes a recipe for a typical dish served by the host, such as Dolly Parton's meatloaf. Where Caselton focuses on the table itself, Von Furstenberg gives a peek into the entire room and home of the host. Both books are recommended where there is an interest.
