Graco SmartSeat All-in-One Car Seat

Just Right

Graco’s top-rated Smart Seat All-in-One car seat could be the only car seat you’ll ever need. It helps keep your child secure in a 5-point harness, from a small 5 lbs. all the way up to 40 lbs. When your child is ready, it easily transitions to a forward-facing seat, for a child from 20 – 65 lbs. in a harness. Finally, it converts to a belt-positioning booster for children from 30 – 100 lbs. It’s like having three terrific car seats, in one!

Safety Features Galore

At the heart of it all, Smart Seat is designed to help keep your growing child safe. This seat is steel reinforced for strength and durability, has been engineered and crash tested to meet or exceed standards, including:

  • U.S. Compliance Standard FMVSS 213
  • New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) – peak Crash Force approximately 2x Car Seat Standard
  • Extreme Car Interior Temperatures

It also features EPS energy absorbing foam for effective impact energy management.

Five Star Rated

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recognized Graco’s Smart Seat with the highest government rating for Ease of Use in all Modes. All car seats rated by NHTSA meet Federal Safety Standards and strict crash performance standards. While all rated seats are safe, they do differ in their ease of use in four basic categories: evaluation of instructions, vehicle installation features, evaluation of labels and securing the child. The Smart Seat from Graco received a five star rating in this evaluation.

Lock It Up

Once the base is installed, you want to know that the Smart Seat is locked in securely to the base. Graco has taken the guesswork out of this process by adding seat-to-base locking indicators, which help to ensure that the car seat is properly secured to the base.

Hideaway Harness

As your child grows and doesn’t need to ride with a harness, Smart Seat has a convenient, integrated harness storage compartment. It holds the harness straps when you’re not using them, when Smart Seat is in the belt-positioning booster mode.

Keeping Level

To make sure your child is riding at just the right angle, Smart Seat includes an easy-to-read level indicator on the seat. It really eliminates installation guesswork for you, mom!

One-Hand Adjustable Headrest & Harness

When it comes to attaining a proper fit in your car seat (essential to protecting your child), it’s important that the headrest and harness are in the right position. The Smart Seat features a one-hand height adjustable head rest and harness, which requires no rethreading—a feature experienced moms love. This way, it’s simple and easy for you to adjust the harness and headrest for a proper fit for your child. Plus, the headrest adjusts to six different heights, which accommodates your child—from baby to “bigger kid.”

Recline On-The-Go

Smart Seat features an “on-the-go” five-position recline, so that you can recline your child while he / she is in the seat. It’s a great convenience feature busy moms will love.

Easy Clean

Clean ups are easy with Smart Seat: the seat cushion is machine-washable and the metal and plastic parts may be cleaned with mild soap and water.

Say it with Flowers

The striking Jemma pattern is just right for your fashionable little girl. With sketches of flowers in hot pink, pale pink, white and gray against a solid black background, this style is fun and girly, all at the same time.

  • Integrated harness storage compartment holds the harness straps that are not in use while in the belt positioning booster mode

Comfortable Ride

The flip-up armrests are comfy for your child as he / she grows, and since they “flip-away,” it makes it easy to get baby in and out of the seat (without having to lift your child up and over). Plus, the integrated cup holder is an added feature kids of all ages really appreciate.

It’s important to follow AAP recommendations for car seat use.

Very big but seems very comfy for my daughter!
We currently have it our chevy traverse and it is fine behind the passenger here as well, but not the drive if the seat needs to be all the back for tall folks!
We love all of the safety features, and the fact that we will not have to buy another car seat because this one will grow with her.

I had this seat for a few weeks but ended up returning it. Its a really great concept and will work great for a lot of families. I just think they need to work out a few issues and then I would be more than happy to buy another for my daughter.
Its extremely easy to install and transport between different vehicles because of the base. Its on the heavy side for carseats but thats not a big deal for me as I dont carry it around on a daily basis ;) Everything is extremely easy to adjust and use.

The 2 things I think they need to fix are the humungo thick harness covers that are required in the rear facing position, then not allowed in the forward facing position. They have thick foam in them so it makes it tough to get the straps tight like they need to be. My daughter and I both prefer the using strap covers and wouldnt be able to when she switches to forward facing :( How about we just get normal thickness pads like the My Ride 65 has so they can be used in both positions??

The 2nd thing I couldnt get over is how reclined the seat has to be in the rear facing position. Its great for newborns and infants with no head control to be at the 45 degree recline, but older rear facing riders may not like being so reclined. That was the case with my daughter and the biggest reason why I returned the seat. If I put the seat in a more upright position it make the level indicator bubble fall outside of the "okay" area, which Graco says not to do. It was very confusing to me as to why they would make a seat with so many recline positions but you can only use 1 or 2 and have the seat be at an ok angle.

MY BACKGROUND - I have a 14-month old and an 8 year old. We have been using this car seat for approx. 5 months now. In our other car, I have a Graco My Ride 65 (also nice but nothing compared to the Smart Seat). Previously, we used the Graco SnugRide Infant carrier-type seats (both children), and I went through a series of Eddie Bauer models with my older child (they were also nice but not preferred anymore).

EASY TO INSTALL - (STEP 1) The base installs very easily and SECURELY. No movement or rocking at all. (STEP 2) Then you slide the seat on when you have the sides in the "unlocked" position. Slides easily right into place (you can choose how reclined you want the seat but for small infants make sure you are looking at the level indicator!) Then you turn the sides to the "locked" position. Simple.

IT'S BIG AND HEAVY - Not sure what to say about this... it's hefty. I like to think of this as "more safe." Not quite as portable as the infant carriers if that is what you are thinking. It takes some maneuvering to get the seat in/out. You also have to slide the front seats way up to install this seat but then you actually have MORE SPACE to put the front seats back (when seat is in rear-facing position) than ANY other seat we tried. So, in case you missed what I just said... you will have MORE SPACE to slide your front seats back with this seat than other models!

REAR-FACING FOR A LONG TIME? We are still using this in rear-facing position with our 26-lb. 14-month old because the doctor said we should do that as long as possible! Thank you to Parents magazine and the American Academy of Pediatrics for also reminding us that even though the law says children must be both 1 year old and 22 lbs., it is RECOMMENDED that you wait until 2 years of age, because it is safer.

I am the kind of person that has to research all of my options out thoroughly, before making an important purchase. I spent literally hours pouring over product videos, reading reviews, looking at different styles of seats, contacting companies about their car seats to see which ones are steel reinforced, visiting countless web sites to compare prices, looking at product comparison charts, etc., etc..

In the end, I decided on this seat for my little one, and I'll tell you why. This seat is not only steel reinforced, it is quite literally an all inclusive seat. It grows with your child from birth through the end of their booster seat days. It comes with an included base that stays in the car, and adjusts from infant rear facing (rear facing to 40lbs), to toddler w/harness front facing (harness to 65lbs), and is then easily removed for the child front facing booster seat usage position (booster to 100lbs). This seat is also extremely easily adjusted with one hand (you squeeze and then pull up) for each growth setting stage that your child has. So there's never any tedious re-threading of the harness, like all other seats (to my knowledge) have.

There is a level mark on this, which makes knowing if the seat is positioned correctly, very super easy. I also like the extra padding, which makes it a comfy ride for baby or child. This seat sits a bit more upright than an infant car seat does, so my small toddler can see out of this a lot better than the infant car seat allowed her to.

I do agree that this is a very large seat, and that if you have a small vehicle, you may not like this. But if you have even a midsize car, this should work for you. We have a Dodge, Journey, and though the passenger seat is forward halfway, it really isn't a big deal.
