This is an excellent book for both teachers and tutors alike. I use it for both remedial and enrichment for the many different levels I am tutoring. The "Putting It All Together" chapters at the end of each unit are really great. The answer to each question is given along with the corresponding lesson so the student knows exactly which skills need to be practiced. I would highly recommend this outstanding book.

This was a great prep for improving comprehension and improving active reading skills before entering high school. Lessons were fully explained, and then you were given exercises in a workbook format in order to check your understanding. The exercises were fully explained afterwards, to further explain the concepts in case something wasn't clear.

I bought this book for my 7th grader to use next year, but like it so much I'm going to adapt it for her older brother. It uses critical reading to understand how paragraphs and essays are put together, then uses those skills to create different types of essays. I love that they have an online practice center with immediate scoring, detailed explanations of the answers, and recommendations for further practice tailored to each individual student. It also shows the student how to study: skimming, highlighting, looking for clues in the text, recording student comments and questions...all the things a local college recruiter told me she wished were still covered in high school. The only thing I wish the publisher had done differently is not put 8th grade on the cover, because I think this book is also useful for high school students.

The content is good, but it would be better if all the answers were at the back of the book, instead of at the end of each chapter. I give the book to my son to work on, and I don't want him to be tempted by the answers and I need to be able to remove the answers and keep them myself.

My son and I worked with this during his summer reading. It was easy for both of us to identify the strategies, challenge his understanding of the lesson and implement the strategies.

My son is about half-way through this book and it has been a wonderful resource. He tests at a higher reading level than eighth (more like 10th/11th), but I wanted to isolate different comprehension skills, and this book has been perfect. I love that there is detailed explanation of each skill at the beginning of every lesson--and since he already has strong comprehension, he can read and understand this himself (although, I am of course right there to answer any questions). Each section includes sample passages and practice questions. The sections are in a logical order, something I am particularly pleased with because too often books present topics in an order that makes no sense to me.

Also, the comprehension is focused on turning the skill toward writing--assessing how something else is written and why it is written that way, and then using that to write passages yourself. As a homeschooling mom who also happens to be a writer, I have been very impressed so far.

That said, my son doesn't exactly jump for joy when I pull this book out. He's a reluctant writer (although he loves to read) and groans anytime the questions require more than multiple choice. But....13 yr old boy. The fact is, he's learning from this and he knows it.
