I bought this for my son who is 12 when he was required to read The Outsiders for a summer read. While he read the entire book, I felt that he did not comprehend the book as well as he should have since he can not understand the gang mentality of the book. This guide helped him to understand the finer points of the story and to be able to answer questions that his teacher asked the first week of school.
While it was a bit too much information for his attention span, he did gain a lot from it. It is not like Cliff Notes which seem to help you to cheat or get out of reading the book. This helped to supplement the reading and the guide asked questions to get more out of your reading the story. In fact, I used the character descriptions ahead of the story to give him a strong foundation to the book. I let my son ask his own questions and describe the chapters to me using his own words but the book supported his ideas or negated them. My son liked the fact that he was able to research his own answers. When my son was asked to write an essay after reading the book, he had such great comprehension of the story thanks to this guide that he found the essay a breeze to write. If nothing else, it will help give you the confidence to answer questions or to support your reading. I highly recommend the GradeSaver Notes.
