I was no fan at all of space side view shooter games, but this one caught my interest. You start the game by selecting all of your weapons, then you are sent out on your mission to fly through scores of enemy space fleets, destroying them to collect powerups and at the end of each level destroy bad bosses. The bad part about the game is that when you die you lose all of your powerups, and start from scratch making it very difficult to get more powerups later in the game because of the difficulty. Another huge downfall is that the sixth level is virtually impossible without having super sharp reflexes. Its a classic that might not be for everyone.

I grew up playing games like this.. awesome game, some drawbacks, but all around quite amusing..

Your start by selecting what upgrades you will save up for as the game progresses. You earn powerups by creating DESTRUCTION toward the alien kind and picking up the energy-things they leave after you blow them all away. As you get farther, you can get better upgrades, like shields, lasers, and the ability to shrink yourself so you can weave in and out between enemy fire.

Difficulty-wise its pretty tough... youll think u have everything, then BLAM, your hit, and you lose all the power-ups! not to mention a life. Once you get to the harder levels and mayors (the game calls the bosses mayors, cause the creators dont know how to translate, them crazy japanese ^_^), if you lose a life, its HARD AS MESS to get your ship back up to speed.. youll be like 'crap! this is hard as MESS!'. especially at this one level, i think its 5 or 6.. it runs UBER FAST!! youll die if you arent careful, UBER FAST too... those are about the only real cons.. now for the PROS!

There are many pros to this CLASSIC game.. for an SNES game, the graphics are quite surprising (good). Music is great, even though youll NEVER get it outta your head! Gameplay is great, cause its not too easy at all, but its still beatable with the right skillz. 2 player isnt bad, its just your everyday switch-when-you-die multiplayer system. Controls are very easy to use, too.

For a side-scrolling game, this one is really unique, and FUNTASTIC. if your looking for a few great hours of fun, try this SHTUFF OUT....

5.0 out of 5 stars A Challange, May 5, 2004

Listen: Gradius 3, a king among games, a beast to conquer, a tiny dot of light in a compleate void. Not to mention the classic horizontal screen gameplay. For those who've never laid their eyes on this game: it constitudes of a single, space fighter on a mission to save planet Gradius. Two player game play is available, although each player will have his/her own mission. Your fighter starts of with very low speed and a weak cannon, you are you destroy the incoming enemy fighter chains and feed off of their energy in order to power up your plane. The more power-up you collect the more you have to chose from; speed, missiles, double, lazer, shield, and so on.

the game really is a madman, the difficulty lies in that the farther you advance the more crucial it is for you to be heavily armed, and although you are awarded many lifes for your score you must stay in one piece throughout the entire game if you plan on beating the whole thing: In the later stages it becomes very hard to power-up your fighter, and every time you explode into a million pieces you have to start from nothing.

This game really is a challange, the normal mode shouldn't be to hard, but hard mode is a for 1ST CLASS FIGHTER PILOTS only.

I really liked this game. The levels are fun, but there are too few of them and the ending is really a let down the first time you see it. Reguardless of how crappy the end is the controls are good and for the time the graphics are as well. This game is a definate good buy and a couple of hours of fun. Once you beat the game on hard you get to play the arcade version which is alot more difficult.

Gradius III is an awesome sci-fi game in which you can pick from a selection of weapons or you can edit the weapons you want to go on your ship, good graphics, awesome music, and it's a one hit you're dead game which makes it a fun, challenging, and addicting game. The person who sold it to us was reliable, the game was in good shape, and it arrived quickly. I love this game and yes I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Gradius game ever!, January 27, 2012

Iv'e been a fan of shooters for a long time and Gradius 3 has always stood out from the others. Not that the others are bad, there not, Gradius for NES and Lifeforce(Gradius 2)among others such as R-Type are classics in there genre.

What seperates this one are a few factors, a major one being that it is possible to beat, yet still with enough challenge for all novice to advanced players. The controls are very nice and smooth and you deal with the A and B buttons only. B fires your primary and your A button selects your next powerup(lasers, force fields, speed, missiles). The music is awesome and has great visuals for its time(1991).
The best part of the game is the Powerup option editing, for whatever you fancy your weapons and shields to be, plus edit them for beneficial reasons such as numerous enemies and difficult bosses, you can change it up for a different game every time. You have four options of difficulty(which is great)easy, novice, hard and advanced.

This game is pure fun and addictive and is number 1 on my list of all time shooters.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great shooter that is a must play in the Gradius franchise, August 15, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gradius III (Video Game)
This was the first shooter I played on the SNES and even to this day, its just an all around great game. I have played both this version and the arcade version (available on Gradius III and IV for the PS2), and personally find this port to be more fun. The difficulty of this version was curtailed a bit, and allows for more of an enjoyable experience while still being challenging. While the graphics are good, unfortunately this title suffers from some heavy slowdown. Although it can be annoying, sometimes its not a bad thing and can allow you time to better take view of the hundreds of bullets and enemies coming your way to plan your aerial strategy.

Perhaps my favorite part of the game is the option to customize the power-ups for your Vic Viper at the beginning. In other words, instead of choosing between a few predetermined "rows" of power-ups, you can change each individual stage and mix and match. For example, maybe you want the Hawkwind missles, but you don't want the laser guns and would rather have the ripple gun. You can change that. Gradius III features all of the goods that the Gradius franchise has to offer, great power-ups, imaginative level design, a moai stage (with giant moai boss)and more. If you can find an affordable copy, which should not be a problem these days, pick it up. It is worth having in your shooter collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gradius III: Awesome Game!, September 25, 2009
By
Chappa "Larcha" (Olympus Mons, Mars) - See all my reviews

Gradius III is one of my favorite SNES side-scrolling space-ship games! It was released on November of 1991 in North America and for its time, the graphics looked quite good. I won't get into much detail since the other reviewers already did a fine job here but before starting mission 1, you get the chance to select many different weapons which are essential for survival.
The game is filled with bosses and the difficulty gets progressively harder as you go along and towards the later half of the game you have to face five bosses back to back! It was tons of fun playing that part for the first time...it produced a lot of suspense. When will these bosses stop coming? I kept thinking! My favorite of the five was the second one...which looked like it had a crystal blue body; notable for coming at you from the left side of the screen instead of the more usual right! The hardest of the five was probably the fourth one though which was a giant ball that had the ability to fire tons of missiles at a time!
The final boss was surprisingly easy!
There was a cool level filled with Moais, those giant stone statues from the Easter Island. For some reason, Moais were used in video games very often and they were always depicted as enemies! By the way, I made a vacation trip to Easter Island in mid-1998...great place! I took many pictures of the Moais during my one week stay and brought a wooden Moai replica home which I bought there! Fortunately, I can walk into my living room without having to worry that it might start shooting those doughnut-shaped laser beams!

The music was awesome! Great catchy tunes throughout! The game play was good as long as you didn't lose a life!
In conclusion, it was one of my favorite SNES spaceship games ever along with Axelay!
Thanks for taking the time to read!
Later...
