I am constantly amazed how some artists like Nerina are not selling like they deserve. This is a much denser, layered CD than her other works. A lot of background music behind the vocals, some strings and horns for a change. Her "Fires" CD was so good that she may never top it, but this is close, and is a great companion as she is not just writing the same CD over and over. Her lyrics are absolute classics and the melodies are just great. It is hard to believe that she has not made a dent in the US market. Her last two releases remind me of the first Elton John albums in that the depth of the music is so far removed from the shallow end of popular music while still being of the same genre. She is as good as there is in mainstream music right now. Songs like "Human", "When Did I Become Such a Bitch" and "It Was Me" are terrific, but nothing dominates the album as every song is excellent. Nothing to skip on this one, just like her last release. Nice guitar playing, excellent on the piano, and the acoustic versions of the songs on her website show that she is the real thing, not supported by studio tricks or auto-tune. A great artist that should not be missed. You will not hear this on your usual radio station in the US, but Nerina is up there for me with Diane Birch, David Mead, Kate Rusby and a few others that have produced the best music of the latest decade in relative obscurity. We should be ashamed at what is on our radio, and what is not.

I'm not sure why Nerina Pallot isn't all over the pop radio dial, but she should be. Check out the videos for late starter on her web site and you will get an idea for the depth of the lyrics, the irony and humor in her songs, and the seriousness of her songs. Or just buy it - you will also want her previous albums once you hear this.
