Not the best (for clinical, at least),
By bananasoup "bananasoup" (Winston-Salem, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Graduate Study in Psychology 2008 (Paperback)
When I first applied to graduate school, I bought both this book and the Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology. To my dismay, this book didn't have any information that the Insider's Guide didn't have--plus, the Insider's Guide gave me a much better picture of what the faculty were working on than this book did. For other branches of psychology, this might be worthwhile; but for clinical-bound people, I'd recommend relying on the Insider's Guide and the programs' websites. Good luck applying!

Graduate School in Psychology,

This review is from: Graduate Study in Psychology (Paperback)
This book was VERY helpful. It had every piece of information you could possibly want about every graduaute program in the US--both master's and PhD programs. It really helped me to narrow down which schools were realistic financially as well as which schools had good programs for my specific interets. I've sent out all my applications, and now I'm just waiting to hear back!

Massive Amounts of Information, But Not Everything You Need,

This book is full of helpful information on graduate programs in Psychology. Using the index in the back of the book, you can easily find a list of all schools providing a program in your field of interest. This index also differentiates by degree awarded allowing the user to find the PhD, MA, MS, EdS,PsyD, etc. that they need without searching through every program in the field.
Each school in the book has information on what programs are offered, which are APA accredited, tuition, admission requirements, opportunities for teaching and research assistance-ships and tuition remission (as well as percentage of students receiving them), student demographics, housing and post graduate employment. Despite all of this useful information, there is no listing of Faculty interests/areas of study. The book is a great starting place, but to find the right school further research would need to be done through other sources, such as program websites and faculty.

a great help,

I have found the book to be helpful in narrowing my search for Grad schools. However some issues...
It seems that it would be beneficial to have two separate sections: one for PhD programs and one for Master's only programs. I have to search through page by page to find appropriate schools based on what degree they offer. Also, the index of the book by specialization is incomplete. It is one of the reasons I bought the book and I was greatly dissapointed. Again, I have spent hours going through the book to look at what schools offer my specialization. They do offer a website to remedy this though. However, despite the issues, it has been a great help to me and I would definitely recommend it. It does take a long time to look through and it is very time consuming, but the information it contains makes the time worth it.

Graduate Study in Psychology 2008 is the 41st edition of this book. I include the book's TOC to show what it is and what it isn't. This book IS a guide to over 500 psychology programs in the US and Canada. This book ISN'T a practical guide to clinical psychology.

Too much,
This review is from: Graduate Study in Psychology (Paperback)
This book has too much information if you are interested in a clinical Ph.D. It lists all psychology Ph.D. programs as well as master's programs. I suggest Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology: 2006/2007 Edition (Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical Psychology).

I'm interested in Sports Psychology programs and while this book does have a few of them, a lot of the programs I found while looking online were not in the book. I would have liked to know their stats for admissions before applying but could not find them online and most were not in the book.
The book would be hard to use as a starting point, I do think they could make it more user friendly and more inclusive with more programs. That being said, I do think it is helpful, just that it could be more so.

This book is just great. If you're ever considering going into grad school, this is the book to get. It has all the information that you want to get from a particular university. It also sort the universities according to the specific branch of psychology that you're interested in. Easy to use and friendly. But of course, you've got to go to the university's websites to check for their minor yearly updates, which can't be covered by this book. This book also give you a rough idea on how high of a GRE score that you'll need to obtain to successfully apply to the university.

This book has helped me find graduate programs in psychology. Internet searches were confusing and lacking information that I needed. Without this book I would be lost!
