Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-The Machs' willful, wild Hereford cow is not feeling well, so the farmer calls Dr. Crump, who gives the ailing bovine a shot. Grady reacts by leaping through a small window, but instead of jumping to freedom, she lands in the silo. Now, how does someone get a 1200-pound cow out of a silo? Suggestions ranging from the practical to the absurd pour in from across the country and around the world. Finally, the farm editor of the Denver Post comes up with the answer-axle grease and teamwork-and the animal is free at last. From beginning to end, the author spins quite a yarn in this tale based on an event that took place in Yukon, OK, in 1949. Artley's watercolor-and-ink illustrations play off the text, capturing Grady's stubborn personality as well as the silliness of the many recommended solutions. Townsend tells the story with quiet humor, while the artist takes it to a louder level. Together they present creative problem solving at its funniest. The farm scenes are accurately drawn with one exception: the Hereford cow should have a completely white face, not just a white blaze. This amusing story will have wide appeal.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH

Children love hearing outlandish tales of animals especially if they are true! My daughter thinks Grady is great and so we have given this book to several of her friends and it has become their favorite story at the moment too. The illustrations are so cute and the way the tale is written will keep anyone interested. Definite winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooray! Someone finally wrote the book, April 7, 2003

What a wonderful book! Illustrations are colorful and real. My sisters, brother and I grew up in Yukon, OK, hearing this true story first hand. I was 7 years old and remember when it hapened. We have passed this story along to our children and grandchildren and are delighted that a book has finally been published. A delight to read, no matter if you are 3 or 83.

This children's book is wonderfully written. Ms. Townsend has captured the essence of old farm life in this book about Grady the cow who becomes stuck in the silo. The escapades of those trying to rescue her and the illustrations that go with it are guaranteed to capture the heart of all children.
