Book Description

0521568196 978-0521568197 April 26, 1996
This book explores the consequences of the Roman conquest of Greece. Social and economic developments during the period 200 BC to AD 200 are traced through a combination of archaeological and historical sources. The particular emphasis of this study lies in the use of archaeological surface survey data, a form of evidence only recently available for the study of the ancient world, which permits for the first time a detailed examination of subjects such as conditions in the countryside and demographic change.

This is a work of great intellectual originality, undoubtedly to be a benchmark study for the investigation of the processes of Roman imperialism though the combination of archaeological and historical data.' Antiquity

'Graecia Capta is one of the most impressive analytical studies based on a Roman province to be published in recent years, either as ancient history or as archaeology.' Journal of Roman Archaeology

4.0 out of 5 stars They came, they saw, they left their mark, June 4, 2001

This review is from: Graecia Capta: The Landscapes of Roman Greece (Paperback)
Susan Alcock's book provides a useful description of the landscape of Roman Greece. Whilst maybe not the most interesting book for joe public, it is filled with detail that makes it a gem for archaeologists and classicists, as well as those interested in learning more about the subject. Some of Alcock's ideas are interesting and it provides an excellent overview and starting point for the area

2.0 out of 5 stars I read, I saw, I fell asleep, December 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Graecia Capta: The Landscapes of Roman Greece (Paperback)
This book was definately written for scholars with a clasical archaeology background and ancient historians. It was dreadfully boring to those without that background and knowledge. It is a fair assessment of this time period and the things that occured then, but it was not enough to keep an average reader interested.
