5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner grammar workbook
My beginning French class at the Sorbonne, and I believe all the other beginning classes, used this workbook. That, in itself, says something about the quality of this book. It is all in French, so you are forced to think in French from the beginning, but it is simple enough that you won't get lost for the lack of English explanation. 3.0 out of 5 stars Recommended by French Teacher
I bought this book on the recommendation of my French teacher at the French Alliance. For someone learning French for the first time you'd definitely need this as an addition to French lessons since everything is in French and there's no vocabulary explanation in it. The price from this seller was very reasonable compared to what they were selling it for at the school...

My beginning French class at the Sorbonne, and I believe all the other beginning classes, used this workbook. That, in itself, says something about the quality of this book. It is all in French, so you are forced to think in French from the beginning, but it is simple enough that you won't get lost for the lack of English explanation. Each lesson contains just enough new grammar rules without too much, and exercises to reinforce your study. It also has pictures and a layout that's okay on the eyes. I absolutely love this book and brought it back with me to the States, even though I'm well beyond the level, just to have it around. This book is perfect for the complete beginner, but if you studied French in a previous life or are a motivated learner, you may want to get the blue "niveau intermediare" book instead of this one, as there is much overlap of material. Having said that, I was very motivated when I started studying French, yet I'm glad to have used the yellow, not blue, book at the start. I found French quite daunting at first and found the slower pace of the yellow book suited my needs well.

5.0 out of 5 stars recommended by actual French person!, December 20, 2007

This challenges you to figure out French from the first--as a native speaker did. No English, but you can deduce what to do with just a little effort and common sense. My French friend recommended it--she teaches adults privately, and it is excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars French grammar exercises, March 8, 2007
The volume is one in a series of interestingly presented grammar exercises which definitely build on themselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good French grammar book, September 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I recently moved to France and this is the grammar book that my French language tutor requested that I buy and use. I brought it with me when visiting the U.S. and left in the backseat pocket of one of my flights :-( I therefor found it on Amazon and re-purchased it.

It is a decent grammar book. It starts simple and builds on the previous exercises. The introduction or explanation before the exercises are relatively short and in my opinion are best accompanied by explanation from a language instructor.

THIS IS A FRENCH BOOK. EVERYTHING INCLUDING INSTRUCTIONS IS WRITTEN IN FRENCH. Therefore, if you attempt exercises on your own and you are novice (which is assumed as this is the beginners book), have a dictionary to translate the directions or be prepared to translate them on the internet.

Some of the lessons are silly (a bunch of stuff about an alien from mars), but I suppose that is expected for a book that is intended for all ages.

This will not teach you to speak french, but it is a valuable resource when learning french grammar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well organized, July 17, 2011

This was a required textbook -- but one I found very useful for re-enforcing what I had learned in class. I also bought the answer book, so I was totally independent. I don't think I ever had to go back to class with a question. (I did have to use my own dictionary occasionally, but learning new words is never a bad thing.)

The price from this seller was very reasonable compared to what they were selling it for at the school. Even though it came from the UK, it still came within 10 days.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Acceptable" really means "Trashed", August 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Alright! Almost $20 for a book that is inked throughout and looks like it's been dunked in coffee and water. The cover looks like it was folded over itself several times... All in all it an embarrassment made worse by the privledge of paying for this "acceptable".

I guess my standards are just too high...
