For the Serious Linguist,
By Samuel Marley (Madison, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Grammar of Boumaa Fijian (Paperback)
This book is terrifically written and organized. It is important to note that this book is only for those well acquainted with language structure and formation. Grammar rules are explained in-depth, with notes regarding dialect differences throughout the Fiji Islands. Anyone who has a serious interest in language, particularly of the south-pacific region, should purchase this book. It's wonderfully informative and very appropriately detailed.

Concise grammar,
This review is from: A Grammar of Boumaa Fijian (Hardcover)
I'm using this grammar for research on languages in the Austronesian family. These languages are extremely interesting, and Fijian in particular has some notable characteristics. Dixon is a notable figure in this field and this work shows his expertise. This book is well written, easy to access, and, unlike some grammars, gives an understanding of the people who speak the language.
I find the discussion of the difference between "phonological" and "grammatical" words somewhat confusing, but that may be due to my own lack of experience. A great tool for researching this particular language and culture. |
