If you are an intermediate or advanced student and you feel you need reliable English grammar information and practice, you should buy this book.

If you are an ESL instructor and you are looking for materials that will help you answer the questions your students keep asking you, you owe it to yourself and your students to look at this book.

There is no better grammar practice book for upper-intermediate to advanced students of American English available than Grammar in Use.

----

As a longtime ESL professional with many years of experience both in the USA and abroad, I have been working with various Cambridge University Press "In Use" titles since the beginning of my career. At present, I work in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as an adult ESL instructor for Allegheny County's community-based adult program and I also do corporate ESL training on a contracted basis.

Grammar In Use is my standard grammar reference text for all upper-intermediate to advanced ESL groups working to learn English for general purposes. I ask practically all my private students at these levels to buy this book, or I buy it for them. The majority find that it is the best investment in their English language learning they have ever made.

The third edition of GIU incorporate the changes made in the British third edition of this book. These include a number of new units greatly expanding coverage of phrasal verbs and also minor but important changes to the explanations and exercises throughout the book. These small changes bring grammar explanations up to date with shifting usage patterns today, and also tweak a few descriptions to make explaining grammar issues easier for instructors.

Very nice updated book. Probably one of the best references for English grammar. It is the third edition who looks like the other ones. They renewed essentially the design but the lessons remain the same as the previous edition.
Good book for the students who are looking for a strong intermediate grammar reference. If you have the previous version, you do not really need to buy this one. Do not forget to get the advanced grammar book from the same author, which is more focus on writing English.

This book is great, special for foreign students who already know English but sometimes have doubts about basic grammar.
Furthermore, the lessons are compact and clear, with answers for self-study.

I was ordering this book for my wife's english class and so far I'm really happy with the choice. It is well structured and contains detailed definition of not only the more frequently used terms. Definitely a must-have to anybody willing to become skillful in using the correct english.

I've been using Grammar in Use in an ESOL classroom for years. I've also used it for individual tutoring and workplace literacy. While it doesn't cover everything, it does a great job of dealing with the most often used grammatical structures, and because it has the answers in the back, it is great for independent study and review. It makes sense to buy it from Amazon because it costs about half as much that way.

This was for my Thai wife who is trying to get certification as a nurse and it should help greatly in her learning English. Heck, I have excellent English, having gone to a private school that escelled in English education, literature and composition, but we never learned grammer!! Interesting when I try to learn a new language, and teach English to Thais, how I realize how fractured our tongue really is!

I love this resource as a guide to American English. Good examples and plenty follow-up exercises. Be aware that some versions of Grammar in Use are the British version of English so the spellings vary and some concepts diverge from the American version. This one is the American one.

I have been looking for a strong intermediate grammar book for a long time. Even as an ESL teacher with lots of grammar books at my disposal, it was hard to find a book that addressed the right level and topics for students who are ready to take their basic skills to the next level and start putting the pieces together.

This book fits the bill! At first I wasn't sure about the lay-out since so much text is included on each page, but I have found that the 2-page unit is just right for consistent and daily study. The examples and explanations balance important details without too much information, and the thoughtful exercises require students to apply the new structure through critical thinking and deeper understanding, rather than copying isolated structures and phrases.

I would recommend this book for college and adult students who are working alone or with a tutor. Since the explanations are kept to a minimal and the exercises are intensive, students need to be highly independent and motivated to make the most of the text. In addition, the book doesn't include vocabulary or communication (reading, writing, speaking, listening) exercises, so students/teachers will need to supplement this book with others if looking for a more comprehensive approach.
