Book Description

Poetry. "Amy Scattergood's poems are elegant, severe, intellectual, and somewhat cool to the touch. They are also passionate, dense, musical, and both imagistically and aurally sensuous, full of what in food talk is called mouth feel. While her poems are often idea-governed, they proceed by way of the world of things, remembering always that words are things also" - Reginald Shepherd. "THE GRAMMAR OF NAILS is an enacting of attention that is beautiful and compelling and necessary. Amy Scattergood has attended to the needs and the offerings of the natural world surrounding her, as well as to the needs and offerings of language, and this book has become a collusion and a collision between word and world which is exciting and, in its clarity and precision, a little dangerous" - Bin Ramke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wit and Intelligence from a young poet, August 5, 2002
This review is from: The Grammar of Nails (Paperback)
I recognized this poet from her years of publishing in journals like Grand Street and The Paris Review. But this was the first time I've read a larger sample of her work. She's a truly gifted poet, with a remarkable intelligence and precision of language, as well as a crafty sense of humor. She weaves mythology in among contemporary tales and issues, managing somehow to balance irony and lyricism. From the bible to classicism to pop culture, she's able to draw from an impressive catalog of texts without ever losing an easy, organic quality to her poems. She even manages in one poem to use Mary Poppins as the hysterically impossible model of parenthood. I can't recommend this collection enough to other poets out there, and I'm eagerly awaiting her next work.
