I picked up "Grammar For Dummies: 1001 Practice Questions" thinking it was going to be more than just a rudimentary workbook. I thought it might have basic rules, general descriptions, and other bits of grammatical advice. Perhaps my expectations were skewed, however, as this is simply a compendium of questions that assume a pre-existing basic knowledge of the principles involved.

Maybe I should have shopped for these titles (also by Geraldine Wood) instead:
English Grammar For Dummies
Grammar Essentials For Dummies

Wow! The "For Dummies" brand has become so all-encompassing, it's hard to know what to look for--especially if you are making blind online purchases. In my wildest dreams, I would like a book that contains BOTH the philosophy and rules of grammar as well as ample test questions. So while these practice questions are nice and online options are included, the book wasn't as complete as I might have hoped.

That said, I did think that the questions were concise and the answers were quite complete in explaining the correct choices. This would be a good refresher test for students trying to hone their writing skills. The book is structured into easily identifiable test chapters and is intuitive to use. Overall, it is a well executed workbook, I just wanted a bit more in the way of explanation before diving right into the test. KGHarris, 9/14.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great challenge to see what you really know! August 12, 2014
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
First, I just want to say I LOVE the "Dummies" books! They are usually very well written with a bit of humor and very forward moving and friendly. This book didn't disappoint in that respect, and the author's tone is spot on.

However, I was surprised this was not so much an instructional book , as from the stock photo you see loudly "Grammar for Dummies", so you might tend to think this is a "Dummies" instructional book written like a high school English book might possibly be. But if you'll look above the title, there is a thin blue strip that tells you what this book is "1,001 Practice Questions". It is actually more of a knowledge test of what you have learned, filled with 1,001 test questions, and the corrections if you don't get the question correctly. Check out the index, it shows you are going to get a thorough work out of the English language.

There is a little surprise in this book, and it's a cellophane pouch in the back that has a private pin number that you can use for up to 12 months on their website to access all the questions and answer online, & customize and challenge yourself in the areas you want to work on most, no extra charge.

Not a beginner's book in my opinion, but a great challenge for those with a moderate understanding of good grammar and want to reaffirm and test themselves.

Be sure to read the title - this is a book of practice questions ONLY. There is no instruction, just a brief "What to Watch Out For." It is to be used with Grammar for Dummies book as extra practice.

Personally, I think they should have included these questions with the book as a free download. For each grammar topic, you will get about 10-15 extra questions to practice, for a total of 1,001 questions. The questions take up the first 1/2 of the book (144 pages). The answers are in the back half of the book (about another 144 pages).

The publisher also offers the SAME 1,001 questions online. It is supposed to be adaptive. As you learn, the questions change. So, I signed up using the code provided in the book. However, I was not able to access the course in any of my browsers. I tried Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. I am running a Mac, so maybe it's not Mac compatible. At this point, I'm too disappointed to continue. Not the best product. As I said before, this should have been included with the Grammar for Dummies book even if I could access the online questions.

I did not find this product worth the list price of $22.99.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun way to improve language skills August 20, 2014
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have very practical reasons for getting this book. I’m an academic tutor and this will be extremely useful when working with my students. But the truth is, even if I did something else for a living I would find Grammar for Dummies irresistible. As soon as it came in the mail I ripped open the package and dove into taking the quizzes--and no my score isn’t perfect, but if it didn’t make me think this book wouldn’t be as appealing. If you’re interested in grammar or enjoy brain exercise activities, this is a very fun book.

It’s not a book that teaches grammar per se, but you can learn a lot with it by testing yourself and checking the answers because explanations are always given. It starts with the basic parts of speech, then moves onto sentence structure, punctuation, and so on, even covering good writing choices and techniques so your prose will be not just grammatically correct but polished and fluid. There is also a code included inside the back cover that will give you a year’s worth of access to all 1,001 questions on your computer, tablet, or smartphone, with the ability to track your progress and customize practice sets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought Inducing Workbook! August 22, 2014
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
As someone who works in... At my day job, I find... As somebody who in my normal job... Ugh. One thing this book does is make you want to edit yourself all the time! What I'm trying to say is that there is really nothing as embarassing as sending out an email with grammatical errors. Especially if the sender is someone in charge. Since I am someone at charge I wanted to make sure I was using correct grammar as much as possible. I frequently practice the correct tenses, correct uses of their, there and they're, and so on. This book was exactly what I was looking for.

It is basically a huge 1001 question workbook. The whole first half are the questions. The second half of the book are the answers. Online, you can do unlimited workbook questions for a year (with the code taped to the inside of the back cover.)

The questions start easily and moves to harder then style questions. One thing I read about the style for emails and texting that cracked me us was that we should remember "cao" - which is a made up abbreviation for "common abbreiviations only"! Hilarious and point taken.

The best thing I can say about this book is that after trying it out I can't avoid recognizing how many rules I'm breaking just writing this review!

Four stars because of the price and lack of Android/ iOS app. At nearly $20 this is a pricy workbook, even with the online tests.
