5.0 out of 5 stars Zombies at a BBQ? AAAARRRGGG!!!!!!!!
Okay, so you are at Gramps BBQ and all is well until some zombies crash the party! That is what happens in this book. The illustrations are great, and story is fast paced, and it is written on about a third grade level and up so your kiddo can do it. You'll laugh out loud at some of the story and pictures. Do your self a favor and pick up this really neat book. It...

3.0 out of 5 stars Zombies at a BBQ? Yikes!
Wiley & Grampa's Creature Features #2.

Grampa's annual barbeque is crashed by hundreds of zombies who loved the smell of Gramma's famous BBQ sauce. There's more to the sauce than meets the eye and only something REALLY toxic will be able to save Wiley and friends. Vera, the world's worst lunch lady, provides the toxic borscht that just might do the trick...

4.0 out of 5 stars Undead in the Head book review, April 2, 2010
Wiley's Grampa is holding his annual BBQ. The event is nearly approaching; the Slick and Slide is ready, the food is all set to be prepared and the guests have been invited. The only thing left is to get ready for a good time. The town's people of Gingham County arrive with high spirits and empty stomachs. Grampa always joked about his BBQ "raising the dead", but on this day it did. A solar ellipse darkens Gramp's BBQ and in the mists of night, zombies crawled out of their graves. The residents of the Eternal Naps cemetery smelled Grampa's BBQ and decided to drop in for a snack.

The towns folk of Gingham Country were terrified at first, thinking the walking dead wanted to eat their flesh. Once the zombies arrived they soon discover that all the zombies want is to taste Grampa's BBQ. But theses zombies can't get enough food. Once all the food is gone, the zombies try to eat the townsfolk. It's up to Wiley, his sidekick Jubal, Grampa, Granma and Merle the lovable cat to stop the zombies.

Grampa's Zombie BBQ is a fun children's book with hilarious illustrations. It's packed with jokes and good-natured fun. All of the characters are lovable and wonderful additions to the book. The main character Wiley, his zany Grampa, the over protective and strict Granma, Wiley's loyal sidekick Jubal and the coolest cat in the world, Merle all play important roles. If you buy Grampa's Zombie BBQ for your children, keep your eyes on the illustrations of Merle. The things that cat does are comical and I chuckled a few times while viewing them. The plot is fairly done, but there were a few sections that even I didn't understand, but the flow was fine. It is a book that I recommend for children.

The zombies in this book are some what traditional zombies. Scroggs does an amazing job portraying the zombies as flesh eaters but making it less frightening for children. That's no easy task. This book is #2 in Scorggs Creature Features series. Check the books out if your kids enjoyed this one. Overall, the book is a fresh new look to the children-zombie literature. I will give Grampa's Zombie BBQ 4 Undead Heads out of 5.

I'm not in love with the fart/booger early reader books, not because they're gross but because they go for cheap thrills, easy laughs, and the predictable repetition of the same old tired gags.
The Wiley & Grampa series is superior mainly because of the sly but accessible humor, and the sense I get that an alert young reader will feel like he's in on the low-brow joke, not the butt of it.
I also like the fact that Wiley and his best friend Jubal and Grampa and Gramma are loyal to each other, brave in the face of Zombie/alien/Dracula danger, and actually pretty resourceful and creative.
You can try any book in the series; order doesn't matter. But remember, it is still a fart/booger/gross food book. Then again, in a way, so is "The Great Gatsby".

I love the Wiley & Grampa series by Kirk Scroggs. Grammpa at the Zombie BBQ is great for the Christmas season. It's 2nd in the series. So, be sure to check out the rest. These books are a lot of fun for boys who might be picky about what they read. If your child loves the Captain Underpants books, then turn him on to these.
