5.0 out of 5 stars Gran Turismo
What can i say about this game: it IS what other racing games should try to be like. The graphics are phenominal. While I appreciate the fact that with this version of GT I have access to all the cars and tracks from the get-go, the lack of a career mode really makes the gameplay get tiring quickly. Plus, in each race you have only three other components, one of which is really dumb but none of which is difficult to beat. The city courses in particular feel less than satisfying due to limited scene rendering and short circuits. But overall, though, for gamers like me who like realistic driving on the go (when we're not driving a real car), this game is quite fun. I do hope the price gets lowered so more PSP gamers can enjoy it.

There is no career mode in this game. It lacks structure. The only incentive to keep playing is to win one race at a time so that you can earn money to purchase more cars. There are limited tuning options, but car parts cannot be upgraded.

The graphics are good. However, I think all the tracks originated in other versions of Gran Turismo. Also, there are only four cars on the track during the race.

There is no internet multiplayer. If you want to play against another human being, you will need to have friends with PSPs.

In short, this game is not worth full price. If your a fan, you've waited four years for this game. Save some money and wait a little longer.

The graphics are impressive - it really shows off the power of the PSP. But sadly, beauty is but skin deep here. It appears that the game was geared entirely towards brief gaming due to the PSP platform - but its not what hardcore GT fans were hoping for.

There is no career mode or customization is highly limited. Think of it as GT lite - Polydigital's take on an arcade game rather than a simulation. Purchasing cars makes little difference other than that you have yet another car. All AI players are in cars selected from those comparable in power to your own so there's nothing to be gained by having a higher power car or a specific make/model needed to enter a particular race. There's no point in choosing a harder compound tire over soft as there's no tire wear for it to make a difference. Issues like this makes the game feel incomplete.

The 3 stars is based on paying $11 for the game. I'd be upset paying more than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watered down but good, May 10, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gran Turismo (Video Game)
This is the watered down version of big brother GT5 on the PS3.

You can't upgrade your cars, race modify, or anything other than choose a paint job when you buy the car. No career mode exists.

There are different types of races and driving challenges to compete in though. I have only tried circuit racing so far where you set the number of laps and such you want. You choose your race type, car, and track.

There are dirt tracks and tarmac tracks.

Don't think you can save up and buy a monster car and easily whip your opponents because the game sets you against comparable cars each time. What you do though is you start each track at it's lowest level, which is usually pretty easy to beat. As you win each time, you start to unlock that track's higher difficulty levels which pay out more per race. The AI gets better each time the track level increases, but you can choose to race each track on whatever level you choose as long as you have that level unlocked. For example, you may start out on level D and work your way up to level A, with A being the harder level. Well you can go back and race level D all you want still.

There are 2 camera views to race in...cockpit view and chase view. Cockpit view does not have interior details though, only blackness. But you see great details outside your windshield as normal while driving in cockpit view. You also have the replay function after each race, which is nice.

Graphics are really nice and sounds are pretty good such as the background racing music and engine noise for a handheld.

Each day you have only 4 car dealers to choose from with a certain selection of cars to buy. Each day that changes at random it seems. So if you see a car you want, race until you have enough money for it and wait for that dealer with that car offered again. Speaking of cars, you can import your garage to GT5 but they are only available in arcade mode from what i've read...gotta find my USB cable to try that out.

Multi-player is via Ad-hoc from what I gather. Haven't tried it yet though, but I do know that each player needs a copy of the game as well as their own PSP.

Overall, a really good game for quick racing on the go. The point of the game, collect the cars and have fun racing. From there, bring your garage to GT5 and have more cars in arcade mode to race on the big screen. I recommend this game if you love GT, want a version of it on-the-go, and don't mind the absense of career mode/upgrade options/etc... It's well-made and fun to play.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good portable racer, April 20, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gran Turismo (Video Game)
Let's get it over with: this is NOT the same game as its big brothers on PS2/PS3. The biggest difference is that there is no career mode, making it seem "boring" to a lot of reviewers.

That being said, this is a portable game and I believe was meant by the developers to be GT "on the go". Sure, you could manage a career on a portable system and I can see how fans of the full-sized versions can be upset that it's not here. But, in my opinion, this game is meant to be played in bursts, to which most people owning a portable system can appreciate.

Smaller? Yes. Boring? Not as bad as people say. I personally enjoy having the beauty of Gran Turismo in my hands to play when I want and not have to worry about keeping my career going. On the flip side, I like having more than 800 different cars and 35 different tracks (that can be driven reverse), leaving a taste of the immense depth the big brothers have. I also like that only 4 car manufacturers at a time per day show up for you to buy cars from. It forces you to be patient in waiting for the car you want and/or need.

Take these points with you and give it a go.

The tracks can get boring, about every 2-3 days (time on the game), only 4 different dealerships are avilible, and in those 4 dealerships, thery only offer about 12 different cars at a time. You also can't manually adjust the engine components (e.g., turbo, boost, etc.). You can, however, adjust the camber, caster, dampers, spring rate, and ride height. Overall, despite the somewhat repeditivness of the game, it is a definite must have for the PSP.

3.0 out of 5 stars A game that gets the fundamentals down but drops the ball in its execution., February 28, 2010
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gran Turismo (Video Game)
Originally announced as one of the flagship titles of the then yet to be released PSP, Gran Turismo Mobile quickly dropped off of the radar into vaporware territory. Well, imagine everyone's surprise when, at E3 2009, Sony and Polyphony Digital confirmed that Gran Turismo PSP was not only in active development but that it was also going to be released this year. After all this time, you'd think the PSP iteration of the long running and obscenely popular Gran Turismo series would measure up quite nicely with its console predecessors. Regrettably, if you thought that, you'd be mistaken.

While this title boasts a very impressive 800+ car roster and a fairly large selection of tracks, many of which can be driven in reverse, and a realistic handling model lifted from Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, it can't compete with its console brethren due to one very large and disappointing omission. The career mode of Gran Turismo games past is missing in action in Gran Turismo PSP.

In lieu of any kind of career mode, you have the option to run a time trial, single race or drift trial and only the latter two will earn you the valuable credits you'll need to build a vast collection of automobiles, both classic and modern. In addition to this, there are a large number of "Driving Challenges" to test your skills. These challenges are almost identical to the dreaded license tests in Gran Turismo games past, the primary differences being that they (thankfully) aren't mandatory completions in order to enter certain races and reward you with credits for completion in the bronze, silver and gold tiers.

Starting out, you are given 100,000 credits and presented with four of the game's many dealerships from which to buy your first car. Every two in game days, there will be a random selection of four dealers to choose from and none of them will offer you more than ten vehicles to choose from on any given day. There's no option to bypass this system, so if you're looking to buy a particular car from a particular dealer, you have to participate in a couple of events to advance the game forward a couple of days and hope the dice roll in your favor.

This was particularly annoying when I spotted one of the cars I'd been dreaming of (the '09 Corvette ZR1) and tried to buy it, only to realize I didn't have enough credits. I was forced to cope with the frustrating realization that I couldn't possibly earn enough credits before a new selection of dealers and cars appeared the next day. On one hand, this is an interesting way to introduce players to cars they might otherwise have overlooked but to leave everything to the luck of the draw seems asinine.

Before this turns into a giant hate fest, allow me to say that there are a number of things that Gran Turismo PSP does right. The visuals on display here are among the best the PSP has to offer, running at a liquid smooth 60 frames per second, the car models are surprisingly well detailed, given the limitations of the platform. Control wise, everything is completely customizable, which is a great inclusion. Handling physics are another high point, but this is no surprise, as the Gran Turismo series has always delivered fairly realistic physics. This also seems to be the easiest Gran Turismo to get into and it's very easy to pick up and play from the very beginning, especially with the much less strict and inviting Driving Challenges.

With no career mode structure and everything unlocked from the very beginning, there's a prevailing feeling of pointlessness in your actions. With everything unlocked from the start, there's no brass ring to reach for and no sense of accomplishment to be gained. Eventually, the endless grind of racing for credits to buy new cars gets stale and combined with the lack of online multiplayer, the long term appeal is limited quite a bit. Ultimately, Gran Turismo PSP is a good game that's buried underneath a series of poor design decisions. The gameplay, visuals, car roster and track selection are rock solid but without any sort of direction to guide players through the game, I can't imagine this will appeal to any but the most hardcore of Gran Turismo fans.

This game at first I thought was going to be a waste of money. It was a good game though. This game was fun but after a while gets boring. This game is more of a game you play for a hour and thats it. I recommend this game to people who love car racing but beware it gets boring after a while.
