The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was the first and largest of the veterans organizations of the 19th century. Comprised of survivors who served in the Union army during the American Civil War, the G.A.R. became a social, economic, and political influence in America's post-war affairs well into the early years of the 20th century. Researched, compiled, and organized by Thomas J. McCrory, Grand Army Of The Republic: Department Of Wisconsin is a unique and comprehensive resource of detailed information about Wisconsin's representation in the ranks of the G.A.R., complete with listings of officers and other leaders, rosters of the state's posts, data about membership, information on all medals and badges, and a great deal more. Simply put, no academic library's Civil Wars Studies collection in general, and no Badger State community library's Wisconsin History collection in particular, can be considered complete or comprehensive without the inclusion of Thomas McCrory's Grand Army Of The Republic: Department Of Wisconsin.

This is a well researched and excellent resource on the G.A.R. in Wisconsin. I can only guess how many years Mr. McCrory spent researching and collecting data for this book. The information in this book is more detailed and accurate than the information contained in the Wisconsin Veteran's Museum!
I had the pleasure of talking with author regarding the research of a Civil War Veteran and G.A.R. member. He was extremely helpful in offering suggestions on where to locate information.

Thanks again for all of your hard work on this book!

While the topic of the veterans organization known as the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) does not elicit much excitement among ACW readers, the organization in its day was literally a "force of nature" in state and national politics. In this volume, the author has painstakingly gathered information and images from every post that was chartered in Wisconsin. Capsule histories of each post are featured, along with numerous photos. Post numbers and towns are cross-indexed for the enthusiast or genealogist. An excellent book specific to Wisconsin that does great credit to the state's GAR posts and their members.
