Buy the French Version,
By English Pete "English Pete" (Not the USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Big Blue, Vol. 2 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I rate 4 stars because the work within the cd is fantastic. I cannot give 5 because of the following.
Although the music on this cd is fantastic and contains work from Luc Besson's favourite composer of music, the great Eris Serra, this cd is not a patch on the complete works. If you are a true lover of the film and the musical composition within, then you have to venture out and obtain the 2 french volumes of this masterpiece. Forget The Big Blue and go for Le Grand Bleu. I'm sure you'll appreciate the difference. I may be English but the French have nailed it here. What a director and what a musical genius. I'd recommend all their works.

Brings Back Many Memories,

This review is from: The Big Blue, Vol. 2 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I've had this CD since 1989 when the movie, "Le Grand Bleu" was the number one movie in France for many, many weeks. I was studying in France at the time and saw the movie three times (which is three-hours-plus long). Each time I play the CD, I remember my French town, my fellow "exchange students", and all of the surroundings which were my home for that year. The music is both incredibly relaxing and invigorating at the same time. In addition, this CD served as the background music during the dinner at my wedding and caused many people to ask what the music was and where did it come from. In fact, the band that played at the wedding informed my wife and myself later that they bought the CD right after our reception and made it part of their recommended background music for all their weddings. GET THIS CD!!! (And try to see the original movie, it is incredible...much better than the American version which is only 1 1/2 hours long...)

The Big True Blue (The French/Global Original Version),

This review is from: The Big Blue, Vol. 2 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This is the orignal, original soundtrack-like it or not !Conti's score was chosen for American audiences. Maybe I'm just a biased Eric Serra fan. Serra composes, produces, and performs some of the most remarkable soundtrack scores (The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita, The Professional) around. Also, any Luc Besson (director) fans know that Besson has utilized Serra's musical services for most of his films... Though, he is not exactly Vangelis or John Williams he is still a highly creative artist in his own right ! No, I have not heard the American Conti version, so I cannot compare and contrast scores. However, to insult Serra's craftsmanship, by calling it a "wrong" or "so-so" soundtrack could be nothing further from the truth.Serra's version is serene, majestic, and a bit jazz-like at times. This "version" is highly recommended...

BE WARNED: This is Not the US Versions' Soundtrack,
By spiderman@1stnetusa.com (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews

I LOVE the movie "The Big Blue" and loved the music so much that I made many calls to LA from Georgia before I finally found someone with the Soundtrack. Imagine my dissapointment when I popped in the tape and started listening too.....the wrong music!!! After doing some research I found out that the Soundtrack was the one to the original foreign film. However the soundtrack was completely rewritten from scratch by Bill Conti for the US version. Why the decision was made to not release this version as a soundtrack I'll never understand. I've been looking for it for years and it's just not available. (If anyone knows where I can find it, let me know please!) The foreign film soundtrack is okay, but no where near as mystical and beautiful as Bill Conti's score. I would recommend buying a wonderful "new age" piece of music rather than this foreign film version of The Big Blue Soundtrack.

This is a great CD. Not all film sound tracks are worth buying, but this one is. The music from Luc Besson's film "The Big Blue" is wonderful, haunting, melodic and very soothing. No hard rock, rap or pop for you on this CD but that in itself is a welcome change. You feel like you are floating in a sea of musical waves whilst swimming with dolphins. Each time I play this CD I remember the awesome scene in the film where the central character Jacques is lying in his bed watching the sea above him slowly lower itself to his reach. Is he dreaming you ask yourself as the music pounds in your ears, or is it reality? I loved the film and I equally love the music that accompanied it. Even if you don't get to see the film, the music stands on its own, and you can't go wrong with the price either. Well worth adding to your CD collection if you want something thought provoking and little different from the norm.

Years ago, when The Big Blue movie was released, many of my friends failed to grasp its message -they thought it to be but the story of the friendship/rivalry between two divers.
But what not even one failed to get was the beauty of the music... I even recall one saying how listening to the soundtrack with his eyes closed evoked "blue" sensations! Among my best loved film music ever!

This soundtrack ranks on top of my top five of the best soundtracks ever, along with Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Sound of Music, RHPS ... this one from French composer Eric Serra follows closely the scenes mood for this movie.
I've heard of an alternate soundtrack by Bill Conti for the US release of this movie (different ending) ... but for me there's only one, get the director's cut and the Eric Serra's soundtrack. |
