Editorial Reviews

The Grand Budapest Hotel (Original Soundtrack), the musical accompaniment to Wes Anderson's latest film, features music from Academy Award®-nominated composer Alexandre Desplat and performances by the Osipov State Russian Folk Orchestra. To help create the film's musical character, the team chose a combination of Desplat's original compositions, traditional Russian folk songs and an exquisite Vivaldi piece to set the scene for a chase through the snowy tundra in this gripping tale of intrigue.

Alexandre Desplat does the musical works for Wes Anderson's films extraordinarily. His past work with Anderson has been some of the best soundtracks (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom) for his films. The world of Wes is amazingly translated into this soundtrack. With the plucking of strings, purity of the brass instruments, and the many influences from Russian Folk music and Vivaldi, this soundtrack matches perfectly with the feeling the film Anderson created intended it to be. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND this to any fan of Mr. Anderson or Alexandre Desplat. Interesting factoid about this scores it's the first all orchestra soundtrack out of all his films to be bestowed with. No regrets getting this beauty!

The latest film from the polarizing hipster director Wes Anderson is The Grand Budapest Hotel, a slightly farcical comedy-drama set 100 years ago in the fictional country of Zubrowka – a place Anderson describes as “part Czech, part Hungarian, part Polish, part Russian, part German, and a little bit 1930′s movie-studio in Culver City”. Ralph Fiennes stars as Gustave H, a legendary concierge at the famous European hotel of the title, and Tony Revolori as Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. Following the death of a wealthy elderly female guest Gustave and Zero become embroiled in a plot concerning the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune. The film features an enormous supporting cast drawn from Anderson’s ever-increasing roster of repertory players – F. Murray Abraham, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Jude Law, Harvey Keitel, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson, and Owen Wilson among them – and has an original score by composer Alexandre Desplat, working with Anderson for the third time.

Desplat describes his score for The Grand Budapest Hotel as “the sound of Mittel-Europa”, a sort of cultural mish-mash of instrumental ideas and compositional styles that is intended mimic a mythical place that sounds just sort of ‘vaguely European’ to untrained American ears – much like the fictional country of Zubrowka itself is an amalgam of different architectures, landscapes and accents. To this end, Desplat augmented his orchestra with all manner of musical textures drawn from across the map: zithers, Hungarian cimbaloms, Gregorian chants, Alpen horns, whistlers, Russian balalaikas, organs, bells and even yodelers.

Alexandre Desplat is a veteran movie composer from France, and his track record is impressive (more on that later). Desplat is the "house" composer for all of Wes Anderson's movies, and he did not disappoint with this latest movie score.

"The Grand Budapest Hotel: Original Soundtrack" (32 tracks; 60 min.) brings a smorgasbord of music from the film, many of the tracks are mere snippets, less than or just more than 1 minute in length, but it doesn't detract from the overall flow of the album. After leading off with "s'Rothe-Zäuerli" (one of the few tracks not composed by Desplat), we then dive in shortly thereafter with the beautiful but all-too-brief "Overture: M. Gustave H", establishing the leitmotiv for Ralph Fiennes' memorable character. The eastern European influences are all over this movie score. Along with the often fast tempo, Desplat creates a soundtrack that is as whimsical as it is delightful. My favorite tracks include "Last Will and Testament", "The New Lobby Boy", and "The War (Zero's Theme)".

In all, this is another outstanding movie score from Desplat. Earlier this month, he was up again for an Oscar for Best Movie Soundtrack (his 6th nomination, this time for "Philomena"), and once again he came home empty-handed. I am quite certain that it is only a matter of time before he wins that elusive Oscar, an honor he surely deserves. It would be nice if "The Grand Budapest Hotel" brings him that honor. Meanwhile, "The Grand Budapest Hotel: Original Soundtrack" is HIGHLY RECOMMENED!

Alexandre Desplat is a frequent collaborator with Wes Anderson, and he does not disappoint here, as it is intrinsicall part of the whole movie experience. Due to the rather idiosyncratic nature Anderson's work he requires an OST that will enhance his individualistic style and I believe that Alexandre Desplat delivers a signature sound track that does its job and then some. This then is exemplified by orchestral elements with keyboard instruments and ambient hums, weaving together eclectic variations of a few melodic themes. Then add influences of eastern European folk music and you have classic must have OST.

Brilliant score. However, this appears to be every single cue. Some tracks are fairly utilitarian as they function only to support the movie. Other tracks play wonderfully on their own as pieces of music. I would have preferred to have only the latter tracks. Mind you, I'll be programming i-Tunes to skip the uninteresting tracks, so in the end it doesn't really matter.

Also, it's interesting to compare this Desplat score, which enhances the movie so much, to his score for "The Monuments Men" which actually detracts from the film.
