Book Description

June 1998
Nowhere else on earth has nature produced so striking an example of the power of running water--and in doing so, exposed so much of the early history of the North American continent. The mile-deep gorge and the ancient land around it, disappearing on the horizon in either direction, are among the last sanctuaries in North America of the wild and inaccessible.

The Grand Canyon presents a spectacle of awesome grandeur and natural historical significance unequaled elsewhere on earth. This is a classic example of erosion--the wearing away of the land--the tremendous chasm's cliffs and slopes of many varied hues.

Grand Canyon National Park, located in northern Arizona, established in 1919, preserves the finest continuous geologic record on earth.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This book is dedicated to all who find Nature not an adversary to conquer and destroy, but a storehouse of infinite knowledge and experience linking man to all things past and present. They know conserving the natural environment is essential to our future well being.

The above dedication used for this entire series of books was written by Dave M. Beal.

Each book in this series tells a compelling story through the eyes of an experienced interpreter whose writing reflects true enthusiasm for the park. Complete with running text and interpretive captions, accompanied by abundant full-color photographs, these books will be welcome in any home library. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
