Grand Finishes For Moldings,
By Bill Canton (Dallas, TX.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Grand Finishes For Carpentry: A Step-by-Step Guide Through Molding Installation Projects (Paperback)
I was surprised to read the earlier negative reviews. I found the instruction thorough and very clear: I've put in base molding before but got a lot out of the crown installation step-by-steps. The book's VOICE OF EXPERIENCES had many helpful hints that added a little levity to my projects but also pointed out several pitfalls I might not have ordinarilly known about. This is the third book of Nikitas's that I've purchased and I use them ("GRAND FINISHES FOR WALLS AND FLOORS" and "GRAND FINISHES FOR TILE") religiously as reference books. Definitely a keeper.

This book isn't very good. It has some basic drawings and tips on how to install some simple molding in your house for a beautiful look. The instructions aren't very complete and don't match up to many of the photos or drawings. If you're looking for a do-it-yourself book about molding or wood paneling, keep on looking.

I know very little about working with wood or the tools needed and GRAND FINISHES FOR CARPENTRY was a perfect choice for me. It didn't insult my intelligence and was never condescending yet explained everything so clearly. I have two other molding books but this one pointed out several of the problems I might have encountered, whereas the others glossed over them. Though not a lot of pictures I thought there were just enough for me to accomplish creating and installing my own wainscoting in our diningroom. My wife even helped, and we both enjoyed the whole process.

Grand finishes for carpentry: A step-bystep guide through...,
By Cynthia (Holland, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Grand Finishes For Carpentry: A Step-by-Step Guide Through Molding Installation Projects (Paperback)
I did not find this book very helpful. Few actual photos, mostly sketches, not many ideas for different designs. Though it did have a few good tips and some basic information, it did not go much beyond that. I returned it.

Thorough and Easy to Follow,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Grand Finishes For Carpentry: A Step-by-Step Guide Through Molding Installation Projects (Paperback)
This book had thorough and very straight-forward instructions for basics like crown and base molding and more complicated things like wainscoting and windows and doors. We used it to put in a wainscoting trim in our dining room: there was no bull or misleading steps. We followed the author's instructions exactly and had no surprises! It all went in great! Our neighbors think I should become a carpenter now! It's a wonderful book for a beginner.

I was disappointed in "Grand Finishes". A great review in the L.A. Times led me to purchase it sight-unseen. It arrived and I was surprised to see very few photos and prety much no ideas for design. Far from grand... There is some good basic info on tools and terminology, to be sure, but "step-by-step" seems a stretch. The installation of wainscoating, a large and potentially complicated project, is covered in just a few pages with mostly sketches and small black and white photos. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone looking for a guide on an upcoming molding project.

not very good,
This review is from: Grand Finishes For Carpentry: A Step-by-Step Guide Through Molding Installation Projects (Paperback)
I actually must have checked this book by accident, but I read it anyway. Im a professional carpenter, so I would say, If you know what a hammer and saw are then you dont need to read this book.I guess Im being a little cruel. If you dont have a single clue about carpentry then this book is ok for you. we make better drawings on the job.
