Close, but no Cigar,

I enjoy Grand Funk's music. Several of their songs got a lot of airplay in the early 70s. The group was considered to be in the same genre as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and the group was typically unpopular with critics. This particular collection is one of the better ones available, though it remains less than perfect.
The easiest way to satisfy most Grand Funk fans would be to put all 20 songs that charted to 1976 into one collection. Then we would all be happy. I personally would have been happy with just one or two more songs from the aforementioned 20, particularly "Feelin' Alright." Until the 20 song collection of all charting songs happens, this CD is probably your best best. Of course, if you are missing a favorite song you have one of two choices. Either get the collection that contains your favorite song, or get the album that has that song, which is also a good idea. Grand Funk was one of the hardest rock groups of their day. Sometimes described as the loudest rock and roll band in the world, Grand Funk was one of a very small number of bands that helped evolve rock into heavy metal. Fans of hard rock and classic rock should have at least one collection from this wonderfully talented group. Enjoy!

I am pleased with this cd, but as others have posted before, there really isn't a greatest hits collection of GFR as they had so many albumns all deserving praise so I may well be purchasing some other cd's of GFR to elaborate on more of the songs they did.
If you grew up a proud blue collar middle class person as I did, GFR should be part of your musical makeup...

I was hoping for a certain live version of "I'm Your Captain" but it wasn't on this CD (surprisingly it wasn't on the Live CDs either). Regardless, the version on this CD is excellent, as are the other selections. Even casual fans of GFR will enjoy this CD. It's full of classic hits.

another victim of the "Loudness Wars",
This review is from: Grand Funk Railroad - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I bought this to replace my old c.1987 CD. Whoever re-mastered this must be deaf or only auditioned it on an iPod with cheezy earbuds! Bass is almost non-existant and everything else sounds tinny. Dynamic range is minimal due to WAY-TOO-MUCH COMPRESSION. I will buy an older release on eBay and donate this to Goodwill

Another Great Grand Funk Railroad Compilation,
By
This review is from: Grand Funk Railroad - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
GREATEST HITS is yet another great compilation of Grand Funk Railroad's hit singles and album tracks for Capitol Records, spanning the years 1969-1975. One song that's here that wasn't on CAPITOL COLLECTORS SERIES is "Take Me", and, unlike the previous anthology, it isn't sequenced chronologically. However, that's not a major problem, as it plays like a great mix tape, showing both the heavy rock side and the later, more pop-oriented side of the band quite effectively. Moreover, the fact that past and present members have supported efforts to free Americans jailed in Iran and North Korea on false charges makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

I grew up with this music in the 70's. My son, mentioned he has fallen
in love with this band, so I bought this for him. He says he loves it. Music from the 70's is soo much better than todays music. I thought it was so cool my 28 year old son wanted music from my day!!!!

There's A Reason Homer Simpson's A Fan Of Grand Funk Railroad,
By SimpsonsFan99 (Indianapolis, IN) - See all my reviews

I wish Grand Funk Railroad were like the cartoon characters on The Simpsons...never aging while still making great product for Capitol Records, just as they did in the 1960s and 1970s. All of these hits in this collection are timeless, though a few, such as the remake of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter", are omitted. All in all, a very good introduction to anyone who is new to the shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner...now I'm talking like Homer Simpson! D'OH!

Mishmash of Grand Funk's hits,
By
This review is from: Greatest Hits: Grand Funk Railroad (MP3 Download)
My three-star rating is for this compilation, NOT for Grand Funk Railroad which scores a five in my book. Grand Funk was first and foremost a live-performance type of band, lacking much of the 'spit and polish' of other groups in the era. What they lacked in finish they more than made up for in energy. In the early 70's Todd Rundgren became involved in their music and gave them the professionalism they had been seeking to compete on top-40 radio. It was this melding that gave them their biggest hit in "We're An American Band", a song I have never liked because it didn't sound like Grand Funk material. Gone was the hard rock style that had been their trademark in the sixties; gone were the semi-psychedelic themes of their music; all of that replaced by a top-40 mentality that admittedly made them a lot of money. I already have the individual CD's of their early music with all the songs I love on them, without the T.R. music, and am not in need of a compilation; however, for those wishing to become familiar with the group this might be a place to start. Sure, they were rough around the edges; but, for those of us who heard them live in concert there was no roughness. Just high-energy rock and roll from a group of guys committed to their music. To really hear these guys in all their glory try these: "Into The Sun" and "Paranoid".

I have the greatest hits cd and the red cd and the live cd. I find myself listening to the red and live album most of the time since I prefer pre 1972 GFR, they changed their style after 72........

The songs are outstanding , the recording is way over recorded sounding muffled and distorted and flat . If you want a good quality grand funk collection , there was a box set out a few years ago that is great .
