This was my intro to this band. And after this I had to get everything else from these guys. I would call this band's music Black Death Metal. Not a full fledged death metal sound, but a definite death metal vibe coursing through each killer track. If you ever hear bands like Dimmu Borgir and wish there was more bite and less orchestration, then these guys will drive you into the ground. Very heavy, haunting lyrics and it's the kind of CD that grows on you to the point that when you pop it into your CD player, you don't just hear a few tunes and slide on over to the next CD; this is one batch of songs that scream to be played in their entire state of madness. Get into God Dethroned, you won't regret it. Cheers, Necrosoul.

5.0 out of 5 stars high-caliber grind-metal from deutschland, June 12, 2000
This review is from: Grand Grimoire (Audio CD)
god dethroned is high-caliber metal from europe. doesn't matter where they're from. this is high-quality. be sure to anchor everything down before playing because everything from the distorted war chants to the slave galley metronome hits like a blast wave from a nuclear bomb

This review is from: Grand Grimoire (Audio CD)
Although I don't know what that is, this album is top-notch! The band name is awesome. Hailing from the Netherlands with throat-ripping vocals focused on violence and blasphemy, frontman Henri casts himself as a valiant crusader against the christian god. As for the rest of the band (new members all), grinding but often melodic guitar riffs, solid drumming, and crystal clear production merge expertly to create a fine contribution to REAL metal. This is highly professional material, folks. While they don't play all that fast most of the time, brace yourself for when they do! The drummer seems to love laying down hard-I mean HARD-beats on the snare and cymbals, and his double bass work makes me dizzy. He blasts through it all with ridiculous endurance. My favorite songs would be The Art Of Immolation, The Grand Grimoire, The Somberness of Winter (a tribute to a famous Danish explorer), and The Colosseum Serenades, a tune about the old Roman practice of feeding christians to the lions in the arena. 5 stars don't really do this release justice, so buy this and support these guys if you like black metal, you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is TRUE BLACK METAL!!!, May 29, 2004

Like the other reviewers say, this is one awesome album. From the opening track "The Art of Immolation", this entire album just begs to be cranked up all the way. Best songs on here are the one I already mentioned, plus "Under a Wicked Moon", which has some truely blasphemous lyrics that would make any religious fanatic die of a heart attack; "The Somberness of Winter", which is about an explorer searching for the northern passage to the Indies, but ends up getting lost and finding what he believes to be a passage to "Hell". The lyrics on this one really give you a feeling of the isolation, loneliness & despair that some explorers must have felt back then; and finally, the title track, "The Grand Grimoire", one of the most brilliant black metal songs EVER recorded, this one was made to be played as loud as your stereo will go. It has some of the most powerful riffs and lyrics of all time. The song is about someone finding the dark book The Grand Grimoire and then using it to unleash Armageddon on the world, covering everything in darkness. It's an instant classic. Buy it, turn it up and play it until your neighbors turn into atheists!!!
