Editorial Review

Despite an intriguing premise and unsanitized content, crime just doesn't pay in Grand Theft Auto 2, an unrewarding gaming experience that attempts to simulate life as a thug. Players begin the game as a nobody and must gain respect from the gangs--mainly by performing "jobs" for them--and make a name for themselves, all the while avoiding getting busted (or worse) by the law.

Unfortunately, Grand Theft Auto 2 leaves far too much to the imagination. Viewed from a top-down perspective, the game's crude, two-dimensional graphics have an appalling throwback look about them, especially the character graphics, which are about the size of ants. Although gameplay is nonlinear, there's not a lot of variety involved, as you basically plod through a homogenous-looking city either on foot or in a vehicle, doing jobs that are progressively more tedious than challenging.

Unless you were a big fan of the first Grand Theft Auto, you'd best move right along, as there's nothing to see here. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Unsanitized content
  • Nonlinear gameplay
Cons:
  • Nowhere near as fun as you'd think it'd be
  • Crude 2-D graphics and uninspired sound

Product Description

This may be the video game your mother warned you about. Rather than being penalized for each innocent pedestrian you hit, you are rewarded in Grand Theft Auto 2. Like its predecessor, the game is viewed from a bird's-eye perspective, and you'll play as one of the little people in a vast futuristic city. The object is to prove your mettle to warring gangs by carjacking innocent victims, assassinating rivals, stealing drug shipments, and completing assorted other missions. But if you're not the type to take orders, you can do anything you want, thanks to the game's loose, nonlinear structure. For example, you can commandeer a bus and take it along its regular route--the passengers will pay the fare without noticing anything different. But if you decide to plow the bus through the side of a building--and you know you eventually will--they'll start jumping out of the windows. And because you're hopping from vehicle to vehicle, you get a good sampling of the city's radio formats--everything from techno to top 40, classic rock to country. Be sure to keep moving, though--the cops will always be on your tail.

Grand Theft Auto 2, quite possibly my vote for game of the year. You can pick this bad boy up and screw around all you want. Tired of having to complete objectives? Go jack a tank and blow the town sky high. In GTA 2 you start as a lowly bum who wants to be in the crime buisness. You start with a few minor jobs and the more you complete the more dangerous and more high paying the next job will be. Completeing jobs aint your thing? Go blow up the gangs you been working for and join another, or heck... KILL EM' ALL! Thats the fun in GTA 2, unlimited possibiltys. Pick this game up and you won't stop playing, Guaranteed!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST GAME, August 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Grand Theft Auto 2 (CD-ROM)
Okay this game isn't as good as GTA 3 so why compare them. GTA 2 is still an awesome game, who doesn't like jackin cars, running from police, doing jobs for gangs...well some people don't like it but hey the rest of us do!! I don't care what people say GTA 2 will always be a great game no matter what. People say the graphics [stank] on the first GTA but did people still buy it?? Yes they did and if you like the first one pick this up for dreamcast, even after playing GTA 3 this game is still fun to play!!
