Editorial Review

Somehow, Take Two Interactive managed to squeeze the controversial Grand Theft Auto into the tiny confines of a Game Boy cartridge. Unfortunately, most of the elements that made this game fun on other systems were lost in the translation.

The basic premise remains intact: you play the role of a hoodlum trying to work your way up the ladder of crime. This is accomplished by committing hundreds of unsavory acts, from simple carjacking to complex missions assigned by the city's crime lords. Eventually the cops become wise to your evil deeds and hunt you down, which adds an extra layer to the gameplay.

The problems with this conversion are numerous. City streets that should be teeming with traffic are mostly bare. It's difficult even to find a car to steal, and actually driving the ungainly beasts is even harder due to poor turning-radiuses and a terrible control scheme. Die-hard fans of the original might like this, but everyone else should opt for the superior PlayStation or PC versions. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Works with original Game Boy
  • Graphics are decent on Game Boy Color
Cons:
  • Horrible controls
  • Carjacking has never been so difficult

Product Description

Try to make crime pay in GRAND THEFT AUTO. You take the role of a freelance criminal who wants to be a full-fledged gangster. You'll get your jobs by answering various payphones, each providing a different mission. And there's plenty of work to be found: over 100 jobs in three huge cities. Jobs range from simple deliveries to complex assassinations. All of the jobs require navigating the streets of the city, and if you don't want to walk everywhere, you will have to "borrow" a ride by throwing someone out of their vehicle and taking it. As you become more of an asset, the gang you work for will give you a beeper and will give you better jobs. However, you will also become a bigger target for the police. Fortunately, you can bribe the cops to leave you alone or find a "get out of jail" key. Try to become the leader of crime syndicate in GRAND THEFT AUTO.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good game with minor set backs, November 28, 1999

Grnad theft auto o the Game boy color does not quite have the same appeal or "playerability" of the PC version, but for such a small screen it has excellent graphics (crystal clear) and has over 100 tasks. It does require, if you want to save your games, a battery backed file and has an excellent sound track. Excellent if you don't cart your PC around with you when you go on holiday. Altogether an excellent game for an excellent price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grand Theft Auto, November 27, 1999

I just recently bought GTA for Game Boy Color and after my first time playing it, I found it to be a bit of a let-down. It was difficult to know where exactly you are going in the game and it was kind of a pain to maneuver your car around tight corners. After playing the game for a while though, it became pretty fun as you go through the missions you are assigned. If you liked the PC version of GTA, I suggest that you buy the Game Boy Color version. Also, for parents, the violence and swearing has been cut down so it would not be too bad for younger children. I give Grand Theft Auto 4 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars GTA on GBC is pretty cool, December 4, 1999

I'm glad I bought this game. It has great sound and terrific graphics. The gameplay itself, however, can be a little frustrating. At times I had trouble figuring out where to go and when you're on foot It can take awhile. The speed and handling of the cars is great.Once you get the hang of it, this game is awesome. It's one of the best action games you can buy for GBC. I would reccomend buying it.
