Editorial Review

Grand Theft Auto places you in the role of a common street thug whose job it is to carry out the will of ruthless crime bosses. Stealing cars and settling drug deals are just some of your dirty tasks as you run, gun, steal, and drive through three different crime-infested cities. Fail and you get cussed out by your superiors. Succeed and you rise through the ranks of the organization, get more respect, and tackle tougher missions. Still, through it all, you play an evil criminal who kills random folks for dishonorable people. This is definitely not a game for kids or the easily insulted.

But if you enjoy random acts of virtual violence, this game may be for you. Just keep thinking, it's only a game. --Allen Stewart

Pros:

  • You can steal any car on the screen
  • Each car handles and sounds differently
  • Easy game play and helpful arrows point your way
  • Open-ended game: pick your own missions, go anywhere you want
Cons:
  • Very violent
  • The game insults its players and cusses at them
  • Outdated graphics, similar to the old Spy Hunter game

Product Description

Try to become a crime lord in GRAND THEFT AUTO. You start out as small time hood, where all you have to do is answer your beeper and complete the tasks that the boss assigns to you. Tasks include delivering stolen cars, dropping off drug money, or completing contract hits. Every mission requires stealing cars, but every car in the game handles differently, so pilfering the right car is important. If a mission calls for you to break roadblocks, a lightweight sports car is not a good idea; you'll want to steal a bus or a truck. Stealing the right car for the situation should not be too difficult, since every car in the game can be stolen including police cruisers. Will you be able to climb the ranks of the underworld, or will you be underwater with cement shoes? Try to stay alive in GRAND THEFT AUTO.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would have been good without a couple of huge problems, April 13, 2002
This review is from: Grand Theft Auto (Video Game)
I've recently beaten Grand Theft Auto 3, which I enormously recommend to anybody who has a PS2 and can tell the difference between reality and fantasy. I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the original GTA (Historical interest, you know), so I bought a used copy.

As everybody already knows, and as I knew, the graphics aren't great. They're 2D and pixellated, and they don't seem at home on a Playstation game. But graphics aren't everything (After all, Tetris was one of the best games ever), so this flaw doesn't greatly detract from the game, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, two other flaws greatly ruined my fun while trying to play. The first is the game's camera. It's really, really annoying, and you can't do anything about it - the camera keeps zooming in on you/your car and then zooming out for no reason, making it difficult sometimes to see what's happening sometimes. Other times, it's just annoying. Also, you can't rotate the camera, which bites.

The second flaw is much more aggravating, and really hurts the game, I think. The controls are almost indecipherable. I figured that maybe it was just that I was still using GTA3-styled controls, and after awhile, I would learn to adjust, but I didn't. I still can't drive a car in this game without constantly bonking into a building, or frantically trying to steer my car back onto a road. There are five different layouts for your controls, all pre-set, so you can't customize it. All five are useless. It really hurts gameplay if you can't even play the game.

The game has great historical interest, and it's still a fun concept. However, if you have a PS2, just forget about this and go for GTA3. At least in that game, if you have a hard time beating it, it's because the game is challenging, not the controls.

5.0 out of 5 stars This game is great fun and full of surprises., July 27, 1999

GTA is the most fun you can have with a video game without your kids. It is definitely a game with adult entertainment in mind. Children under 18 should not be playing this game without parental supervision. It is not for the squeemish. Do not take the game seriously, it is fantasy not reality. It is a game with a sense of humor, and that is all that is required of those who dare take on the challenge of GTA. So, get out there and jack a few cars, run over pedestrians and waste anyone that gets in your way. Above all, HAVE FUN!

4.0 out of 5 stars The streets is a dirty, dirty way of life..., May 12, 2003
This review is from: Grand Theft Auto (Video Game)
and you just became part of it.
Pros:
Brought violence and profanity in videogames to a whole new level
Very good sound effects
long enjoyable levels and misions
A short, but destructable arsenoal
Very useful cheat codes(Despit I usally don't cheat)
Pretty good music
Cons:
The graphics are plain out horrible
one shot death(A bit too realistic)well, unless you have armor
Can't save until you beat a level
definitly not for kids
The game suffers from slowdowns, if too many things are on the screen

In 98 this game was jst a instant classic, despite being overshadowed by loads of games(especially Metal Gear Solid, and Zelda:Ocorina of time). It's definitly unknown since GTA 3 and Vice City overshadowed it by a loooong mile, but yet I still play this game from time to time. In this game you could even say ... the police and let them eat the gat, take out a squad of them with a machine gun, blaze them up with a flame thrower, or just blow them away with almighty rocket launcher(That was propably the main reason this game got a lot of heat form contaversy). If you're used to GTA 3 or Vice City, then this game will hardly be interesting to you, but if you have this game, then I'm sure you appreciate the joy the classic burng to you, and took you on the crazy ride from this, all the way to vice city.

Final Words:Speaking of Vice City, That was one of the levels in this game, and so was liberty City, and San Anderess is the last city. Could San Andress be the next Grand Theft Auto? Hmmmm...

peace
