5.0 out of 5 stars This game is great fun and full of surprises.
GTA is the most fun you can have with a video game without your kids. It is definitely a game with adult entertainment in mind. Children under 18 should not be playing this game without parental supervision. It is not for the squeemish. Do not take the game seriously, it is fantasy not reality. I've recently beaten Grand Theft Auto 3, which I enormously recommend to anybody who has a PS2 and can tell the difference between reality and fantasy. I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the original GTA (Historical interest, you know), so I bought a used copy.

This review is from: Grand Theft Auto (Video Game)
I've recently beaten Grand Theft Auto 3, which I enormously recommend to anybody who has a PS2 and can tell the difference between reality and fantasy. I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the original GTA (Historical interest, you know), so I bought a used copy.

As everybody already knows, and as I knew, the graphics aren't great. They're 2D and pixellated, and they don't seem at home on a Playstation game. But graphics aren't everything (After all, Tetris was one of the best games ever), so this flaw doesn't greatly detract from the game, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, two other flaws greatly ruined my fun while trying to play. The first is the game's camera. It's really, really annoying, and you can't do anything about it - the camera keeps zooming in on you/your car and then zooming out for no reason, making it difficult sometimes to see what's happening sometimes. Other times, it's just annoying. Also, you can't rotate the camera, which bites.

The second flaw is much more aggravating, and really hurts the game, I think. The controls are almost indecipherable. I figured that maybe it was just that I was still using GTA3-styled controls, and after awhile, I would learn to adjust, but I didn't. I still can't drive a car in this game without constantly bonking into a building, or frantically trying to steer my car back onto a road. There are five different layouts for your controls, all pre-set, so you can't customize it. All five are useless. It really hurts gameplay if you can't even play the game.

The game has great historical interest, and it's still a fun concept. However, if you have a PS2, just forget about this and go for GTA3. At least in that game, if you have a hard time beating it, it's because the game is challenging, not the controls.

It is a game with a sense of humor, and that is all that is required of those who dare take on the challenge of GTA. So, get out there and jack a few cars, run over pedestrians and waste anyone that gets in your way. Above all, HAVE FUN!

4.0 out of 5 stars The streets is a dirty, dirty way of life..., May 12, 2003

and you just became part of it.
Pros:
Brought violence and profanity in videogames to a whole new level
Very good sound effects
long enjoyable levels and misions
A short, but destructable arsenoal
Very useful cheat codes(Despit I usally don't cheat)
Pretty good music
Cons:
The graphics are plain out horrible
one shot death(A bit too realistic)well, unless you have armor
Can't save until you beat a level
definitly not for kids
The game suffers from slowdowns, if too many things are on the screen

In 98 this game was jst a instant classic, despite being overshadowed by loads of games(especially Metal Gear Solid, and Zelda:Ocorina of time). It's definitly unknown since GTA 3 and Vice City overshadowed it by a loooong mile, but yet I still play this game from time to time. In this game you could even say ... the police and let them eat the gat, take out a squad of them with a machine gun, blaze them up with a flame thrower, or just blow them away with almighty rocket launcher(That was propably the main reason this game got a lot of heat form contaversy). If you're used to GTA 3 or Vice City, then this game will hardly be interesting to you, but if you have this game, then I'm sure you appreciate the joy the classic burng to you, and took you on the crazy ride from this, all the way to vice city.

Final Words:Speaking of Vice City, That was one of the levels in this game, and so was liberty City, and San Anderess is the last city. Could San Andress be the next Grand Theft Auto? Hmmmm...

peace

Grand Theft Auto is an awesome game in my opinion. The graphics arent as great as some of the new games on playstation, but it is still a lot of fun! You can CarJack, shoot the innocent, kill police officers, get arrested, cuss at people you dont even know, and great stuff like that! NO LIMITS! This is a definatley buyer!

This game is so fun. You hi-jack cars, trucks, motorcycles, even cop cars. W/ the "Kill Frenzy", this game could keep you at the edge of your seat for hours upon hours. It's just too bad that you can't play two players, or if it was 3D, but the graphics are one of the cool parts.

Enjoy!!! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars In it's time, it was an underground classic, December 13, 2002
This review is from: Grand Theft Auto (Video Game)
The original Grand Theft Auto was a classic for the PC, but it's gleefully unabashed violence, simple graphics, dark humor, and addictive gameplay garnered the game much appeal and controversy. Eventually Take 2 Interactive (now they're called Rockstar) published GTA on as many systems as it could: the PS1, Dreamcast, and even the Game Boy Color. These days anyone and everyone are GTA nuts, but only when it comes to GTA 3 or Vice City. The original GTA may seem simple enough, but it is undeniably fun for the most part, no matter how simplistic the graphics seem. The missions can get rather tedious, and the fact you can't save your progress in game (a problem which would be corrected in GTA 3), and eventually you'll lose interest, but for the most part the original GTA is still loads of fun. Those who have only played GTA 3 or Vice City will not like this original installment, but it's a great ride while it lasts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Play this on PC, the Playstation version is not the full version, November 25, 2006

I just wanna review out something no ones said yet.

If you still ever play this game, it is a great game, it's 5 stars, provided your into this sort of thing.

But recently when i played the playstation version, i noticed they jibbed out and didnt include certain things that the PC version and better version had.

First off - There is no train. The PC version has a fully working train that you can hijack and even put into reverse.. sure, it may be useless to crash into another train, but it was entertaining. The PS version doesnt have a train.. but yet, it has the tracks for it, so go figure that one out.

Next, lack of vehicles. The PC version doesnt have spots where cars just disapeer and it feels like your walking around a ghost town.

And something no one can say wouldnt be better... you can edit the PC version, not only can you put whatever car you want into the game by downloading a simple quick device them importing a car you can download or make yourself, but you can also change everything in the game with simmilar tools. You can not just add cars, you can add missions, put more cars into things, edit the exsisting map, or hell, make your own city from scratch.

When I play this game, i like to ride around in Knight Rider, or maybe the General Lee, try and eulude cops driving lambourghinis... gouranga!

Convinced the PC versions better? Makes you feel like the PSX you played was lacking, huh?

4.0 out of 5 stars Politically correct people's nightmare, April 12, 2000

= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

But I loved it. The mob, the Yakuza, Mexican drug dealers, crooked cops, and Rastafarians all want your help, and you can't say no. Drive cars off bridges, watch the cops shoot pedestrians, and finally see the guy you've been working for when you complete the mission. Of course, parents of little kids will hate the game for all its worth, but they hate anything with violence or cussing. As for me, I see nothing offensive about the game. After a while you curse back at the computer when it curses you. But I can't give it five stars because of a few drawbacks. At times, all the cars dissapear when you are not done yet, forcing you to turn the game off. And once you beat it, you don't truly have a reason to play it again soon. And no death metal was included in the music track, which made it a little boring. But if you want months of entertainment, have no problem with grituitous violence and pointless swearing(you really should not, it's just a game), and want lush, vivid colors, get this. Just don't think it will last forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GAME YOU CAN NOT GET SICK OF, January 25, 2002

This review is from: Grand Theft Auto (Video Game)
Ive got one word for this game : AWESOME

Ive always dreamt of a game where you could just go around a city full of civilians and cops.Where you got total freedom to do what you want and go where ever you want to go, commit any crime you want, hijack any car you want.

And my dreams came true, when i found this game i honestly couldnt get enough of it and still cant. You can do illegal jobs for bosses of the town such as murder one's, collect money and get into gang wars.Or if you are not in the mood to follow orders just go on a killing spree or try to see how many cars you can hijack before the cops arrest you.You have a wide range of cars also you can get buses, trucks, tanks, police cars, ambulances and you can even drive with the siren on.

Thats what i love about this game as you can do what you wish, and dont think the cities are small, they are very big with alot of highways, bridges and little ally ways where you can escape from the police.

BOTTOM LINE get this insane highly enjoyable game. But i must warn you before you buy that homework wont be completed or you will be late for work as this game is hard to put down.

HIGHLY RECOMENDED
