An infant-care nurse, a soon-to-be PhD student at MIT, and an unemployed kid with a versed intellect in cognitive science and anthropology are not the first things to come to mind when people think of rock musicians. Nonetheless, these are the members that comprise Grand Unified Theory, a three-piece group hailing from Berkeley, CA. Undetected Plagiarism Records is proud to announce the release of their self-titled debut CD. Jerry Chen, Diego Montero, and Julie Macon have created an honest record that pours their non-musical interests into songs that are immediate, yet strangely cinematic. Their 10-song CD was recorded in their little apartment in Berkeley, mixed by Aaron Prellwitz (Death Cab For Cutie, Erase Errata, Red House Painters, Hella) at Tiny Telephone Studios in SF, CA and mastered by Doug Van Sloun (Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint, Rilo Kiley) at Studio B in Omaha, NE. With lyrical material ranging from the futility of originality, the meaning of success, mob mentality, the curse of art, and the trappings of corporate culture, it is clear that this group has a lot to offer musically, and otherwise. We hope you listeners will enjoy it.

Picked this up at the college radio station for a review, and it was great! Though this band has a sound of their own, several songs sound to me like Mr. Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes (The Plane Crash Marks the Time). Easiest songs to pick up and like are 1, 4, 10.

I can't get enough of this album. I've had it on repeat for the past 2 days in my car stereo. Absolutely no filler crap. GUT really knows how to write some beautiful music. Oh yeah, and the songs are super catchy. Definitely pick this album up if you hate mainstream radio and are into the indie rock, lo-fi kind of thing. Try and catch their live shows too, they really kick ass. And tell Jerry Chen I said Hi.
