Mysterious short story that keeps you reading to the last sentence, part of the Comedie Humaine. La Grande Breteche is a deserted house; Balzac gives a brilliant description, which makes us want to know more. The narrator is visited one day by the late owner's lawyer to tell him to desist from further trespassing in the grounds. The story of the former owner, Mme de Merret, unfolds...

This is a very short book and this particular version was obviously copied by a copy machine (black smudges, etc.) Upon reading, the pages started to fall out. I am glad I only had to read it once and that I didn't pay very much for it.
